The Jehovah’s Witnesses have come under heavy criticism in recent years for their shunning policy. For those unfamiliar, the religion dictates that all baptised members who either resign from the religion, or who are thrown out for some perceived violation of its rules, must be complexly shunned by all Witness family and friends.
This edict extends to family members as well; sons are expected to shun fathers, mothers expected to shun daughters, and so forth. Refusal can, in the worst instances, cause the offender to also be shunned. Because Witnesses are very insular, discouraged from forming close friendships with those outside the faith, it often means that a shunned one literally loses everyone they have ever known and loved.

The policy is taken so seriously, and is so strictly enforced, that the Watchtower Organisation (the group which controls the worldwide religion of Jehovah’s Witnesses), make the policy a keynote teaching point at its 2016 worldwide conventions. During this event, which all Witnesses were required to attend, an extended video series was shown instructing Witnesses on how to shun family members. Even picking up the phone when a shunned member called was declared to be a grave error. We covered this controversial event in a previous article.
Now, a heartbreaking video has emerged online showing how far reaching and deeply ingrained this shunning policy is; a video showing Jehovah’s Witnesses clapping in applause as a little girl announces she is shunning her own sister.

The incident appears to take place at one of this years Watchtower conventions. The video was posted on youtube by the girls parents, apprently eager to share with the world how they had trained one of their children to pretend her sister didn’t exist purely on the basis of religious dogma.
The video was comment-protected once viewers began expressing concern and displeasure at what they saw, but at the time of writing the video itself is still live and can be viewed below on the family’s youtube page. It shows a little girl called Melody. She is ten years old, and was apparently baptised when she was 9. This means that Melody is now committed to the religion for life, and will be shunned if she ever leaves, or “unrepentantly” breaks any of its vast array of detailed rules.
During the interview, Melody explains that she has a sister who was “disfellowshipped,” which is the Witness term for one who is excommunicated; someone who was thrown out of the faith rather than leaving of their own accord. We are not told the reason for the disfellowshipping, but one can be subjected to it for a wide range of reasons such as pre-marital sex, celebrating Christmas or birthdays, voting, taking a blood transfusion, joining the military, or simply questioning any of the doctrines of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Melody states that her sister was trying to contact her, and asking her to stay in contact despite Watchtower decreeing that she be shunned. Remember, Melody’s sister has probably lost all her family and friends at this point; everyone she ever knew and loved.
Melody admits that she misses and loves her sister, but states that she was afraid that if she didn’t cut her sister off completely, she might be tempted to keep some form of relationship going. Thus, she has decided to shun her completely, as Watchtower demands. She claims that this was to protect her relationship with Jehovah.

Child Indoctrination: A very real tragedy.
To those who are not familiar with Jehovah’s Witnesses, or other high control religious or political groups, it may seem incomprehensible that a little girl could behave this way about her own sister, or that those in the room would react with applause and not horrified astonishment.
But the sad fact is that such indoctrination is all too common, and all too easy to achieve, especially in the kind of high control environment that Watchtower constructs around its followers; controlling the information they are allowed to read, the people they are allowed to speak with, and sadly, which family members they are allowed to see.
Watchtower, which astonishingly is a registered charity in many countries despite enforcing such draconian and inhumane laws upon its followers, often attempts to mislead the general public about shunning. Sometimes they pretend that the policy is not strictly enforced, or give the impression that it does not exist at all.
Sadly, this video provides yet more proof that the shunning policy is real, and that families and friends are being broken up as a result. I hope that little Melody is able to break free of her chains one day, and be re-united with the sister who loves her.
Is Watchtower keeping their eye simple? All one has to do is look at statistics of the area in which they live to find out.

Wow again. & thanx. U seem to know a lot. I googled those guys – pretty nasty players. 1 of them got “hoisted by his own petard” in 1937 I believe. What I can’t get over is how we (they) never question it or we never questioned it, they (rank and file) don’t question it when they hear comments as in the latest jwbroadcasting episode when they say there will be no need for doctors after Armageddon or during the new world. We were always told that it would take a thousand years to reach perfection but now it seems that if you make it through Armageddon, they will all be perfect but if they are going to be perfect, then why the need for Jesus and his 144,000 to rule over mankind, judging them etc and will it be impossible for them to break a bone?
You are not recognizing a fundamental truth about WT’s teaching. Most of the WT teachings are inaccurate interpretations of Bible scriptures. That applies to what it says about the 144,000, the Christian church, and the new world. Everything you learned from WT should be suspect.
When you learned Russell taught the pyramid doctrine it should have been easy enough for you to figure out WT does not know the meaning of Bible scriptures. Again, everything you learned from WT is suspect. Everything needs to be re-examined concerning the meaning of Bible scriptures. If you attempt to reason out things according to WT teachings, of course you’ll come up with wrong conclusions. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

After that, I helped him as much as I could, until I realized his problems went wayyy beyond alcoholism. lol & er (eyes rolling) So we were hangin’, & being an aviation buff, I showed him a YouTube clip of a Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet pilot giving a little “tour” of the plane’s cockpit, followed by a short flight filmed from the cockpit by a GoPro. Fun stuff. But my friend was all like, “That’s no big deal. I could learn all that in 2 or 3 days.” Wow. So I guess thousands of air force pilots in nations around the world must all be mentally challenged or something, since their training normally takes 2 or 3 YEARS. Poor bastards. If only they knew that they could do it in a coupla days, IF they happened 2 B a gifted JW ‘genius’. & think of all the money the respective governments would save, since it normally costs a coupla million dollars to train 1 of these dudes/dudettes.

A young girl indoctrinated with bullying tactics that due harm to her older sister is shameful and disrespectful. However, we need to see that the Watchtower leadership has a huge role in teaching individuals to be bullies to people who do not agree with their “standards”. Several psychiatrists would wholeheartedly disagree with the shunning practice of any religion and would side with the person who is being shunned. I believe that shunning should be directly called “bullying tactics by certain religious groups”

I totally agree that shunning is definitely a bullying tactic. It is emotional blackmail. It is implemented in order to force you to do what they order you to do, otherwise they take away all that is important to you such as family and friends. I was disfellowshipped for years and my family gave me the articles written in 1980 to let me know they could not even sit down to eat a meal with me. I was devastated, but respected their wishes. During the time I was out I had nightmares of being destroyed at Armageddon along with my children and their father. Needless to say as time went on I really desired and needed the love and attention and emotional support from my family because I was going thru some trying times, so I applied for re-in statement. I had to “prove myself” for a year before I could have my family back. If that is not blackmail or bullying, I don’t know what else to call it. Very very sad what the leaders of this org do to the emotional aspect of their followers. Their doctrines make a sane person commit very insane acts.
“Their (WT’s) doctrines make a sane person commit very insane acts.”
Their (WT’s) doctrine is always changing. And contrary to WT’s profession claiming that behavior of theirs is prophesied in scripture, the constant changing of doctrine identifies WT as an apostate Christian organization- per the scriptures. While new things can be learned from the scriptures by anyone, fundamental doctrines of the true Christian church do not change. Because real truth is factual, and things that are factual are not contradictory ideas. One fact cannot nullify another fact. One truth does not make another truth disappear as truths do in WT teachings. (A common response of some elders is, “that was the truth then). Stop lying to me!!!
The Bible has been around a long time, and even WT has been around about a hundred and thirty years. Since WT always changes its position on the meaning of scriptures, we might ask, does WT even know what the scriptures say? Do you know what those mean WT?
Notice this statement from Eph 4:13-14 “until we all attain the oneness of the faith and in accurate knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of stature that belongs to the fullness of the Christ; in order that we should no longer be babes, tossed about as by waves and carried hither and tither by every wind of teaching by means of the trickery of men, by means of cunning in contriving error.”
The above scripture says “until we all attain the…faith in accurate knowledge” and goes on to state so that we then as individuals (not only as an organization) would not be manipulated by the deceptive teachings of men.
WT’s method of teaching, by constantly changing, harmonizes with the idea of this scripture, because WT teaching is constantly changing its belief of doctrines, and on important points of behavior for all its congregants. For instance, sometime in the late 40’s or early 50’s WT wrote the Catholic practice of excommunication was demonic. Several years later WT began doing so itself, that was it started to excommunicate its followers. Right after that came the string of offenses church members could be excommunicated for. And we can guess that string of offenses will probably be added to in the future. Are we JWs being tossed about by this teaching? Is it contriving error as Ephesians mentions? And if you say not, how do you know it isn’t? What factual ideas could you present to at least strongly prove these constantly changing ideas from WT have God’s approval?
Let’s briefly look at the scripture WT uses in its attempt to justify teachings that constantly are changing and, have its congregants “tossed about as by waves and carried hither and tither by every wind of teaching” per Eph 4:14. WT uses Proverbs 4:18 “But the path of the righteous one is like the bright light that is getting lighter and lighter until the day is firmly established.” the next verse, vs 19 goes on to read, “The way of the wicked ones is like the gloom; they have not known at what they keep stumbling”
Isn’t that scripture Pr 4:18 that WT uses to justify its constantly changing understanding of Bible doctrines like “the faithful and discreet slave,” the rapture, or disfellowshipping, referring to a righteous person’s path (meaning his/her walk with God)? I believe the verse, by itself, directly says that, and the next verse, giving the contrasting position of unrighteous individuals further suggests it. That verse WT uses is talking about an individual’s path, his or her walk with God. It’s a stretch to suggest it refers to a Christian organization’s understanding of what all its members must believe, and how those members must act to please God.
Rather than WT claiming that scripture says what it actually says WT uses it to claim we (WT), as an organization, are given the God given mission of changing our understanding of Bible doctrine in a continual manner, that you (everyone else) must accept to please God. Therefore what you (everyone else) agreed to believe about God’s message when we (WT) baptized you must change to fit whatever new beliefs we present to you.
I say hogwash. Examining the Bible’s words for what those words actually say at Eph 4:14 fits WT’s teaching method like a well fit glove. Proverbs 4:18 does not, for those words are not even commenting on teaching, but rather the path or walk a righteous person as an individual has with God.
WT, when are you going to stop lying to us? Or, are you just that ignorant?
Like I’ve suggested to others, learn what words mean, and how to interpret words that are strung together in thoughts (sentences, paragraphs, chapters, and books), or either turn to other Christians who have the ability to figure some of that out.

@GAMEISOVER, when I first became a Witness in the 1960’s, that scripture at Ephesians 4 was drilled into us and it is still being drilled into Witnesses as that is what makes the difference between Watchtower and “Christendom” is that Witnesses do change their doctrines so that they come to to an accurate knowledge unlike Christendom who refuses to make changes.
Now that I am out of the religion and not indoctrinated, of course I see that Watchtower fits that scripture but while I was in it, I was made to think that that was what made it the “true” religion. We always looked forward to questions from the readers and I am sure Witnesses still look forward to the questions from readers because they love learning new “truths” that the faithful and discreet slave would come to the accurate understanding of scripture.
There are dozens of scriptures, that now I see Watchtower pushes to the side or explains their way out of them but II was too blinded to see the real “truth” of those scriptures, just as the one in Ephesians while I was fully indoctrinated but now those scriptures stand out like red flags but not while I was in it just as we have to understand how the 8 millions JW’s still think.

In the “Remember the Wife of Lot” video, Brian, the husband who is misogynistic and a bigot towards the LGBT community, tries to tell his wife Gloria to simplify her life. It is clear that Brian cannot take care of his own household.
In my opinion, Gloria should find herself a family law lawyer and pursue a divorce on irreconcilable differences and try to get full custody of the daughter. In that way, Gloria can have peace of mind and push for financial freedom.
Then, once the divorce is finalized, you will need to get rid of Brian from your daughter’s life. Have your daughter state to you that Brian sexually abused the daughter and then have psychiatrists and psychologists encourage the court to modify Brian’s visitation to no visitation. In this way, Gloria and her daughter will be able to set their own course without Brian’s consent.
In the United States, divorce cases continue to be in favor of the woman over the man and is a sure bet to get what you want. Then, Brian will blame Watchtower for trying to follow their recommendations and then Brian will cease attending meetings and become inactive. Thanks Anthony, great video. What an ass-clown!

I’m over in Asia again now. I made a rather forthright answer on Sunday, about elders having a little sovereignty of their own (paragraph 14) and how they could be little dictators. Tempting fate, I was. I don’t think the elders liked it. Two of them wanted to see me after the meeting tonight. A couple of years ago I had wanted to meet one of these elders but when I approached him on three different occasions he was too busy. It was only after I threatened to write to the branch about him that he suddenly agreed to meet me. So tonight I entered the interrogation room, told the elder that before when I wanted to speak to him he was always busy, so I am learning from him and tonight I am busy. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. I then walked out of the meeting.
Childish, I know, but my hope is that when we do meet, I can ask them how it feels like, and so why do they treat the sheep like this.
If you were in my congregation, you’d find my answers interesting. But like you say, it is like watching a sinking ship. Or a slow motion car crash. Here in Asia it’s the same as Australia. Not the look of a progressive organization.

I watched a documentary on child soldiers in Africa. A Canadian general, I believe it was Chastallaine, confronted one of the “commanders” who allegedly employed such child soldiers. Chastallaine basically tried to shame the guy by implying that if u need to force children to fight for u, u’re not any kind of military commander, not even a man. Kinda like how they used this little girl to make their point about shunning. How they baptize them at such a tender age. The indoctrination we all experienced, from whatever age. @Twistedsister69, your telling about how Watchtower is so desperate about “fear” in shunning a loved one by putting up on the platform a child such as the girl in the video above, it reminds me of how our circuit put up on the platform at a circuit assembly the woman who had an affair with her co-worker who was a Witness and she was married at the time too and the two of them moved in together and he got disfellowshipped and then they got married after they both got divorced. He was disfellowshipped when they moved to our congregation (in a different circuit) but nobody knew why he was disfellowshipped but because she was from another religion (I think born again) and they needed somebody from a religion like that for the assembly part and so they put her up on the platform at the assembly and when I looked into their history and found out that she was the one that caused the divorce I wrote to the Society and so they had the circuit overseer sit down to talk to me about it in front of our elders and he said that after looking into it, that he would have done the same thing all over again.
The experience that she related on the platform was how a “co-worker” witnessed to her and that is how she got interested in the “truth” and left her old religion but what she left out was that that co-worker was the one she was having an affair with and broke up her marriage and the Witness marriage for.
I know I have related that experience here before, but I think it bears repeating when it comes to experiences that we might have heard on the platform but we don’t know anything about behind the scenes in those experiences and so with what I know about those experiences, I don’t believe any of them anymore.

Just spent the weekend all alone as wife went to visit Family, spent a lot of time on you tube, plenty of current stuff on people protesting assemblies over the ARC, also spoke to a long time friend & fader who tells the same story of diminishing numbers in the congo, even his Mum no longer goes, & she is a long time faithfull sister, also learning so much in relation to the many changes in the silver sword, so much out there.
Yesterday I saw a movie called “The Big Sick” which is a true story and I think will be nominated for best picture and it’s too bad it’s rated R for the f word because it’s such a great movie but because of the R rating, Witnesses won’t go see it.
It’s about a Muslim man who falls in love with a white girl in Chicago and he’s too afraid to tell his family and because of that, she broke up with him. He can’t tell his family because he can only marry another Muslim girl or be excommunicated from his family.
When she gets sick and is put into an induced coma for 13 days, he is there for here and gets to meet her family and they fall in love with him and finally when she recovers, he gets up the courage to tell his family and sure enough they excommunicate him.
There is a scene where he goes to their house when he knows they are having their weekly family meal and goes into the house and sits down at his place where he had always sat and there was no plate for him and he told them that he would not let them do that to him but of course they stuck to their guns but in the end, his mother did make him some food for him when he was moving to New York, but she still refused to look at him when his father delivered the food to him as he was leaving but the father said that it was goodbye forever.
Spoiler alert. It does have a happy ending but one is left up in the air, if his parents ever talked to him again.

Yeah, I saw a preview of that movie – The Big Sick – on Late Night with Stephen Colbert, when they had the main actor on as a guest. I believe he wrote the script too; I think it’s based on his own life. There must be some comedic elements as well, some fictionalized. In the clip they played, the guy is meeting with his “in-laws” 4 the 1st time. Since the guy is muslim, the dad (played by Ray Romano) asks him, “So what do u think about 9/11?” After a brief pause, the guy sez, “9/11? Well, of course it was a catastrophe…….we lost 19 of our best guys.” I almost died.
