When the JW Broadcasting website was first announced at last year’s annual meeting I immediately relished the prospect of seeing Tony Morris in front of the camera in glorious technicolor for an hour-long show.
I consider myself Tony’s number 1 troll. He is, in my opinion, the most deluded, controversial and intellectually-challenged of all the Governing Body members, and I unashamedly thrive on his misadventures.
As Tony’s train-wreck performance at the 2014 U.S. branch visit showed (which has yet to find a place in the “on demand” section of tv.jw.org), his unguarded rants are an Achilles heel when it comes to exposing the authoritarian, backwards thinking of the Governing Body.
I was nearing the end of my recent stay in Belgium when the news came through that the new January 2015 episode of JW Broadcasting was Tony’s slot. I immediately watched the first 10 minutes with one question on my mind: “Would they let him speak his mind, or would they write his script for him and keep him on a tight leash?”

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this was indeed an authentic Tony Morris offering of verbal flatulence of the type other Governing Body members struggle to replicate. Here was a man whose ignorance was on show for all to see; who had no qualms about uttering such ‘pearls’ as…
“If we are in continued association with those who do not believe the same, it can erode our thinking and convictions.”
“It is one thing to work on a job with others, and quite another matter to immerse oneself in an institution of ‘learning’!”
“I have long said: the better the university, the greater the danger. The most intelligent and eloquent professors will be trying to reshape the thinking of your child, and their influence can be tremendous.”
The above three quotes show in a nutshell why Watchtower is so terrified of young Witnesses going to college and university. They know full well that the critical thinking skills gained, which are an essential part of learning, can equip a person to quickly see through their propaganda.
Put simply, education is Watchtower’s enemy. Knowledge is the antidote to their indoctrination techniques.
Nothing spells this out more clearly than the scripture chosen by Tony as a ‘basis’ for the prohibition on higher education. When the Apostle Paul, himself the beneficiary of a good education (or so we are told), spoke about “bad associations spoiling useful habits” he was apparently issuing a call to arms against the Ivy League. (1 Cor. 15:33)
The flimsiness of this scriptural invocation should by itself tell parents and budding students everything they need to know about Watchtower’s motives. Watchtower’s notion of “bad association” in this context is spending time with clever, well-read people who will help you to think for yourself.
But if there is one thing you should never underestimate, it is the potency of Watchtower’s coercion techniques on its indoctrinated prey. And in Tony Morris’ half-hour rant against eduction, these were out in full force.
A classic example can be found between 07:25 and 08:20, where Tony regurgitates a hypothetical scenario (repeated from earlier talks, see video below) in which parents drop off their child to attend university, and enroll him/her at the local kingdom hall only for ‘disaster’ to ensue once the child makes a break for it and starts missing meetings.
“My question is,” bellows an indignant Tony, “who dropped them off at the university?”
Thus the “three F’s” of a Tony Morris talk are deployed:
- FEAR MONGERING – “Let me tell you about a nightmare scenario that could happen to you one day unless you shape up.”
- FINGER POINTING – “Allow me to single out those who fell short of Jehovah’s expectations in this scenario, and who will pay the price for doing so.”
- FAULT FINDING – “Most importantly, here are the main culprits in this whole sad story who bear the most responsibility and need to explain themselves to God.”
- There is a fourth “F” in a quintessential Tony Morris talk, but to spare your blushes I will refrain from telling you it.
As transparent as these methods may be to you and I, it is sad to consider that they will work only too well on Witnesses who are stricken deep within their indoctrination.
As I express in my video rebuttal to Tony’s speech, Watchtower’s prohibition on higher education is an abhorrent manifestation of the organization’s all-encompassing greed and solipsism. To hijack the hope, promise and potential of young people in this grotesque manner by stifling their opportunities and assimilating them into their propaganda machinery as “pioneers” is utterly reprehensible and immoral.
I can only hope that a fortunate few among the ranks of young Witnesses will see straight through Tony’s nasal oratory and seize their chance to make a break for it, and make something of themselves before the opportunity passes them by.

@Wild olive. You are SO RIGHT about GB will give you anything if you have a skill or trade they need. I thought that was a stupid picture about basements. I’ll have to buy a bigger house because no one in our congregation has one! But the watchtower said about ‘go into your interior rooms’ MIGHT ??be keeping close to your local congregation ! So JUST GUESSING ! Again ! EVIDENTLY??? In the same Watchtower some poor sister went into a really long answer about GOG being Satan!! So they have a huge build program to build branches, translation offices, new designed kingdom halls and at the same time they say soon there will be persecution and will gather in basements.

The two ideas completely contradict each other and the idea on spending money just on increasing properties is completely opposite of Jesus idea of helping the poor.
This is totally crazy and screams cult!

Why they do not realize that the scare tactic is just to let the followers become their slaves?, they want to use people time and resources for their schemes. They perfectly know that there is no persecution, they only want more and more properties. They want bethel to become also JW tourist attractions. Kingdom halls to become McDonald’s style properties and produce multimedia content to push their orwellian lifestyle. Lastly they want the GB to be worshiped like or instead of Christ.

Notice that Christs means anointed. And they treat people as not Christian it they do not believe in them.
They are all trying to confuse everyone, so they just get fed up and let the gb do the driving.

@ brandnew, yes it is embarrassing,it’s shadows of the fly saucer cult,do you remember them? They all had to be in a certain place and would be taken up into an alien craft and depart into the depths of the universe.
I sat in that study and felt how could everyone just accept this without question.
The other thing that was lacking was any explanation of faith in the ransom to save anyone.

Why are you conducting bible studies for the WTBTS cult?
Have you explained what is really going on in the WTBTS to the gentleman who is a commercial fisherman?
I find it hard to understand why someone who comments on this site about the horrors of this cult, would conduct bible studies with people, and encourage them to join the cult!
I realise that some folks have to stay in to keep a relationship with their families, but do we really need to conduct bible studies for the cult?
I’m not judging you, but from what information you have provided, I must admit I am dumbfounded.

Excelsior -I agree with you on this one.
At the time of my waking up I was conducting two Bible studies and had not long led another poor soul to baptism. My conscience would not allow me to continue to teach things that I did not believe with my whole heart.
I explained TTATT to both parties, one decided to continue to have a study with another person, the other was grateful for my honesty and we have remained good friends. The recently baptised person has also now been woken up and has discontinued her association.
Really, the best thing we can do is try and prevent people getting involved. I do know a few who have now stopped their studies when informed of the real truth.

Yes the only reason Ime still affiliated is that my entire family are all in well and truly,I am in the process of building a new faith so when the time comes and I know it will Ime not going to be entirely on my own.
As for the study Ime conducting,I’ve made it plain to him that he’s going to be worshipping an organization,on some things he even agrees!
I think what he really wants is the company,the doctrinal stuff seems irrelevant to him,the elders are suspicious of me because he’s not “progressing”,but something that I think that both of are missing,is that people have to go through a process to get to what is real,I know I had to go through it to see TATT,why is anyone else different?for some it’s short for others it’s decades,I have absolute faith that all who are TRUE worshippers of God have nothing to worry about,Jesus will gather them all to him,the scriptures guarantee that.
So I see this all as the work of the Holy Spirit,not something that I have to control,that’s what I used to think before I was awakened,like the GB.
@Wild olive. I am in the same position as you. I have bible studies & conducting them slowly so as to show them the history of the organisation & dragging them on as I know if I stop some other really zealous pioneer will get them baptised within 6 months…

I’ve noticed a few comments on “fighting this cult”which is the righteous reaction,however it plays straight into the persecution complex that jws revel in.And which the GB plays like a violin,just like the Judge.
You and I should talk more of strategys to undermine GB bs,if Ime going to take them on I want to be smart about it,and to me anything direct is counter productive,we have to be as slick and way more ruthless if we’re going to win.

I salute your attempt to tell the gentleman about what is really going on.
It is up to your conscience how far you take your activism.
At some point, though, we need to tackle the source of new recruits, to starve the WTBTS of “fresh meat”.
I hope that you will eventually find a way to get out completely from the WTBTS, along with your family.
In the meantime, just encourage your bible studies to do their own independent research. There is a scripture that asks us to make sure of all things, I can’t remember where it is.
I would encourage all that are forced to stay for family, to be super eager about the Governing Body, but really rubbish at making converts! Then the elders can’t have a go at you, because you use all the correct buzz words, and fit the pattern of a good little Witness.
Also, it’s time to write to the authorities (charity commission, MPs, etc) and get the general public up to speed on the reality of those harmless, goofy JWs.
Maybe it’s time to go door to door, just like the JWs do!
We need to starve the WTBTS of new recruits. This will help other families to avoid the distress of shunning, that so many of us suffer on a daily basis.

If 100,000 Ex -JWs could PROFESS Mock Repentance to be Re-instated then Gradually Befriend Bros & Sisters with Kindness & the Odd Subtle Comment to Undermine the Lies of the GB & if some felt they couldn’t contain themselves then CLOG UP the Whole bunch of Elders time with Judicial Committee after Judicial Committee . Cause DIVISION by getting Bros & Sis to take sides .This would cause Conflict & Maybe get More to wake up to the Deceit the GB are perpetuating . Remember this is only a suggestion.

@Pickled brain and Wild Olive, I have a suggestion for you. Since you are still going to meetings, nobody will suspect if you should send a copy of Crisis of Conscience to your studies, anonymously. I’d go to a nearby town where they won’t know you at the post office and send them a copy with a note inside something like:
I heard you are studying with Jehovah’s Witnesses and I think you should be warned before getting too involved and am sending you this book to read.
I’d type it so they won’t be able to identify your handwriting and of course don’t put your return address on it.
I can’t do that since everybody knows I have a grudge against the Society and they could trace those books to me but since they don’t know how you feel at this point, that’s what I’d do with a Bible study. I did that with Captives of a Concept with the mother (who hates it that her daughter doesn’t want to go to college now and wants to pioneer instead) of the girl I started the study with. I can’t say anything to anybody else or they’d disfellowship me in a minute but since the mom already hates the “truth” so much, I knew I could trust her not to turn me in. Whether or not it helps her to turn back, I don’t know yet as it’s early and she’s been the little “rock star” in our congregation for a while now.
I know this is a late post to this article but I had a realization this morning that maybe others have already had.
My family are all JWs and, because of all of the “higher-education” policies and “Armageddon is soon so don’t plan for the future” teaching, they now have absolutely nothing by means of investments, pensions, or savings for day-to-day and retirement. Because of that, they have become very tribal/insular and dependent on each other. They literally live from paycheck-to-paycheck (if that). This type of co-dependent relationship seems to add pressure to stay inside the “Organization”.
I am now understanding why JWs say “Where else where we go?”. I am starting to think they mean that more in a material sense than a spiritual one.
But, maybe I am wrong… (said by no one ever in the GB)

However, were I one of these people I’d only see this as a victory and proof of my position. I would have made you change your website. That is a victory by itself, and anyone who sees that change will know you changed it because it made you look bad, rather than let your site stand on its own merit.

I haven’t “changed my website.” I have taken down a survey that was being vandalized by a coordinated effort from people who loath me, and replaced it with a much better, more comprehensive question on the 2015 Global Survey which includes questions about the effectiveness of other websites, such as JWfacts.com.
And yes, you badly need to get a life – especially since you’re desperate enough to change your IP in order to keep trolling me. I suggest you meet some new people, start a romance, or maybe even take up a hobby – anything that doesn’t involve hounding people online who you’ve never met over trivial matters.

You have a much better chance to help them before they get baptized. Afterwards, the Society will make them pay dearly for quitting.

@pickled,anonymous, the idea about crisis of conscience is not a bad idea,have to tell that I struck a blow yesterday,a sister was complaining to me about lack of help given to some of the elderly ones,I replied that shouldn’t really bother you as there isn’t any specific provision for the elderly directly from the organization, any help will be on a congregational level,their only doing what their been told to do.

WildOlive, i have actually dealt with Vince Otoole, over a child abuse matter when i served as an elder, words cant describe him, oh well lets call him a grub, he warned us that if we went to court & kept quiet, we would go to jail & the society woudnt help us, & he knew that other elders hid info from the police, i didnt know, i have said this previously, so it suites them to send certain people to uni, or use ones who are educated, but keep the rest dumb downed, so many i see here are home schooling & not getting any life skills, very scary, lots of people heading for the scrap heap.
There was an older movie starring Andy Griffith titled A Face In The Crowd, in which he gave a great performance as a man who became a megalomaniac, drunk with fame and power and eventually exposed as a fraud in the best way possible for people like that to get exposed. I would love to see one of these broadcasts or even private footage of the governing body to end like it did in this film, exposing them for the frauds they are. Tony talks about tight pants, spandex and all but is a big flirt like many of the elders

Wow, I’m an ex JW and occasionally browse Reddit and other sources of anti-JW info but I certainly don’t have a vendetta or actively try to dissuade anyone from doing anything they enjoy. I actually just came across this site and was shocked to see articles about Anthony Morris. When I was a JW I attended the Lumberton, NC congregation with my mother and Anthony was our presiding overseer. I have been disconnected for a while and didn’t realize he had moved up in the ranks. Crazy.
