News Bulletin: Watchtower tightens shunning rules to include “sinful” inactive ones.

Screenshot 2016-05-28 23.25.32
Camera footage taken by Alex Silva at the Jersey City Regional Convention.

Rumours have been flying about in recent weeks that Watchtower might be changing its shunning policy for the worse at the 2016 Regional Conventions entitled “Remain Loyal to Jehovah.”

We at JW Survey had been aware of these rumours, and had received credible information from reliable sources that seemed to confirm that these rumours were indeed true.

However, since we knew that speculation without absolute proof on this issue might cause unnecessary distress, we decided to wait until absolute concrete proof emerged of this change before reporting it.

Thanks to a member of the Ex-Jehovah’s Witness community, Alex Silva, who bravely attended the Jersey City convention in the US and recorded severa key talks from the program, we now have recorded confirmation that the information we were given was true.

The talk “Shun Unrepentant Wrongdoers, to be given at the 2016 convention as part of the symposium “Loyaly Uphold Jehovah’s Judgements” will apparently expand Watchtower’s shunning policy to include the following scenario:

  • If you are currently considered “inactive,” and are known to have committed a “serious sin,” Watchtowers official position apparently is now that you must be shunned without the requirement to wait for a Judicial Committee.

This will include everyday “sins” such as:

  • Moving in with an unmarried partner
  • Smoking
  • Celebrating Christmas
  • Premarital sex
  • Same sex marriage
  • Criticising the Governing Body
  • Denying Watchtower teachings
  • Celebrating Birthdays

Essentially, any action that would result in a baptised Jehovah’s Witness being disfellowshipped will now result in an inactive one being shunned without the requirement for Judicial Committee action.

This will come as deeply upsetting news for the many inactive ones who have “faded;” the term often used for those who, by a mixture of good fortune and careful planning, have managed to leave the Watchtower religion without sanction from a Judicial Committee, and thus avoided the penalty of shunning. Many such ones still have contact with their Jehovah’s Witness families; contact that now may be cut off if their families consider this person to be “sinning” in the way prescribed by the Governing Body.

It is hard to see this new command as anything less that a deliberate attempt from Watchtower’s leadership to target such “faders” and drag them back under the Governing Body’s control via a policy that amounts to nothing less than pure emotional blackmail:

“Do as we tell you or you will never see your love ones again.”

We are preparing an article to analyse this apparent expansion to Watchtower’s controversial shunning laws in more detail.

We are also preparing an entire series of articles to deal with the various controversial stories that are emerging from this 2016 Regional Convention. Those who have been following this convention will know that this change to the shunning policy is just one of many astonishing and disturbing aspects of the program.

If you are “inactive,” or “faded”, and are concerned that your ties to your family may now be severed, we at JW Survey feel deeply for you. Many of our team are in this position as well.

I am one of them.

I am hopeful that my family will chose to continue association with me, despite the condemnation of my lifestyle by the Governing Body as “serious sin.” But if they do not, I refuse to allow Watchtower’s Governing Body to use my family as leverage to rule my life.

I do not negotiate with hostage takers.

Can someone tell me if these ‘Bunker Videos ‘ are actually being shown at the 2016 conventions or are they spoofs?
This is a genuine enquiry- I cannot quite believe what I’m seeing.
Has anyone actually been there and seen them?
    Or are they made up?

I was there, and yes, they all are real. In fact, everyone in the org that I know has since been just as crazy as one would expect them to be upon seeing something like this. “The Great Tribulation is right around the corner! The GB is warning us!” etc. Pretty soon this might turn into another 1975 situation.

From my understanding they are showing videos like that at the weekly meetings too. They have to keep everyone in constant fear for their lives in order to keep control.

This is so true. Periodically, I read comments on here where people say: how do intelligent, reasoning people fall for this and stay in?

I speak for myself as a well-educated woman who is a business owner and entrepreneur in a family of people who are also college educated (most before finding ‘the truth’). It is exactly that. The fear.

I’m in a family of highly intelligent people. Not bragging, but really, we have been objectively recognized for it on our jobs and in our communities and schools. But as I have said before, we’re all in.

There is a lot wrong with society. Not ‘the society’. I mean the world. There is violence and injustice and war and poverty, etc.

And it looks like mankind is not going to fix it before we annihilate ourselves. That is a scary thought.

So when you have a religion that promises that God will fix all the problems in your lifetime, that’s appealing.

Smart people who are paying attention to world events are often more distressed about them than others.

So then, once you latch on to a belief system that claims to have the one and only solution AND you come to believe that abandoning the beliefs or the organization will result in your everlasting death, it becomes almost impossible to leave.

It becomes almost impossible to wrap your head around even thinking of leaving.

Whom shall we go away to?

It is a scary, scary thought that kept me awake more nights than I care to admit.

People talk about ‘fear of missing out’ when it comes to email and social media.

But the thought of all of my family and friends enjoying the paradise forever and me not being there was really horrible.

It was enough to keep me in line and part of things for most of my life, in spite of a lifetime of doubts and misgivings.

Again I say, we are all taught to ignore our doubts and focus on the rewards and trust that Jehovah will sort it all out in the new world.

We’re taught that we must have a healthy fear of displeasing him.

I have only recently recognized how unhealthy that fear is and how detrimental it has been to my life.

@fallingangel….I do understand where you’re coming from…and my point is not to disparage someone’s beliefs…..and I say this as a fader who was in the borg for 40 yrs……but the basis of all the “education” the WT provides is based on fairy tales that appeal to human emotions rather than logic….it’s the same as believing Greek mythology as having been real…the whole cast of characters…once you realize that the Judeo/Christian belief system is fundamentally the same….mythology…then you won’t have anymore sleepless nights

            @nullandvoidboy:

“………the Judeo/Christian belief system is fundamentally the same….mythology…….”

You’re absolutely right about that. What was at one time an ancient, Jewish etiological myth – the story about Adam & Eve – became a necessary component for Christian theology. Can you believe that? Christianity is based on an ancient, Jewish etiological myth (Adam & Eve) which fundamentalist religions like the JWs believe is true. The JWs will keep waiting for a Paradise that will never come:

            https://jwawaken.com/2016/05/18/adam-and-eve-were-set-up/

In her book: “Adam, Eve and the serpent”, Elaine Pagels makes the point that
Original Sin, a doctrine that man was weak, fallible, and unable to govern himself, was more useful to an Empire and a Catholic Church that both wanted obedience:

@nullandvoidboy: this is the other reason I frequently refrain from commenting on any threads for any subject, not just those geared towards religious issues.

I think maybe you misunderstood my entire point.

I was saying that I got a good education. A real, secular education. Book learnin’, lol. :-)

I went to very good schools for the gifted where we were doing college level work by 6th grade.

Some college level curriculum was incorporated as early as 2nd grade.

I’m not referring only to what I learned from Watchtower publications, although the teachings did undeniably shape the person I am today.

Seriously. My parents encouraged me to read anything and everything I wanted to and could comprehend.

And I was a voracious reader as a child. I don’t want to sound arrogant, but it’s probably too late for that anyway.

I could read by age 3. Really. Really books and magazines. Not books for children. Books for adults.

I used to read the encyclopedia when I was in elementary school. I would just take a volume off the shelf and read cover to cover.

And I read novels, sometimes one short one a day.

I read the Watchtower publications, but I also read classical literature and Greek mythology and creation myths, etc. from around the world.

My parents valued knowledge and let me read a lot and let me ask questions.

I do feel like that was exceptional. Most JWs did not grow up with that freedom or those opportunities.

I was always allowed and encouraged to read, but also to remember that we had ‘the truth’.

It was this kind of upbringing that is probably the reason I have been acutely aware of the logic conflicts and discrepancies from a very early age.

It was framed by my parents this way: Here is what people have believed through the centuries. Here is what some believe now. Here is what we believe.

Belief was linked with approval by God and salvation. There was emphasis on general knowledge as compared to ‘accurate knowledge’ from the bible.

And I did question it constantly.

Of course as a child, you’re thinking: how are fairy tales different from fables, mythology, or the bible or comic books and movies for that matter?

But my point is that Jehovah was very real to my parents and they made a supreme effort to make him very real to me, both as a benevolent rewarder of those earnestly seeking him, and as an all-knowing, almighty being who would see me if I did wrong and see to it that I was exposed and punished if I tried to cover it up.

My point was that people are not drawn to JW doctrine only because they’re stupid and lack the capacity for independent thought.

My parents are very smart people; my husband is also. He is one of the smartest people I know. But all of them need to believe that Jehovah is going to ‘cleanse’ this wicked world and start a new one.

I agree with you. I do feel like it is based more fully in emotions than logic, but not for lack of ability to think logically or to reason.

It is possible to have the ability to reason and still come to the wrong conclusions. People do it all the time in all areas of their lives. And for reasons that are myriad and varied.

They are real. Someone posted the following link several comments ago, and I’m re-posting.

Additionally I went to a KH this past Sunday with my folks out of good will towards them, and up on the front of the stage were two (2) 65 inch flat screen TV to play such videos during the week.

Has anyone seen the new time slips to report your Field Service information? I was shocked! However will this technology make it into the “New System”? As last weeks WT study says, how will you accept the guidance from the GB on the use of technology as the direction and implementation comes from the God above……….

Additional food for thought most of this technology came into play after Jarcez (sp?) passed away. From my understanding he was adamantly opposed to technology, well when he passed, the technology was rolled out in a grand fashion.

What makes me feel like raging is when the Watchtower clearly preaches that the end is two seconds from happening (whether from the podium, literature, or video) but they throw in a Get Out of Jail Free disclaimer clause of “remember what we just said may or may not be true”.

Like in the Bunker video that pretty much sold the whole Anne Frank experience, and at the end, throw out a disclaimer incase someone wants to call them on their bs.

Even the ones I did enjoy like the one about the family that went through “job like” trials was bitter sweet due to the fact that I was told how it should be watched and what frame of mind I needed to have in order to appreciate it by a member of the governing body via video clip before hand….. What do you think is worse between SHUNNING close relatives and accepting being RAPED to please Jehovah?

You can read in the Watchtower issue of 1 February 1968 the following:

    *** w68 2/1 p. 71 Shocking Religious Persecution in Malawi ***
one night a group of these Christians was awakened by Congress Party officials. The men were beaten and slashed with sticks and pangas [machetes] and then were forced to look on while ten of their women were raped. Two of the women were pregnant, one of whom later had a miscarriage as a result.
Late in October a large number of Christian women from the Mlanje area were assaulted and raped, and on October 25, 1967, a fifteen-year-old girl at Mkuwila Village, because of refusing to compromise her religious convictions, was tied to a tree and raped six times.

Somewhere in the same issue you will read:

“….they were in good spirits, determined to stand firm. Truly, such faith is commendable, but is not a government that treats them so harshly making itself an object of shame before the world?”

If you fail to ask yourself why JEHOVAH can NOT make him/herself an object of shame, you will never understand the tactics JWs use in their warfare…

Religious entities are similar to political entities regarding these three objectives: Power, Control and Money.
How religious entities differ is they obtain these three objectives through Fear, Shame and Guilt with a bit of hope thrown in. It is the old “carrot and stick” trick.
Fear is the biggest motivator and political entities use this to their advantage also.
However, high control groups such as the JW.ORG religion have taken this to a new level by
targeting children, the emotionally vulnerable and those lacking basic, critical thinking skills.
It has been my experience that a good many people who are attracted to this religion fall into two basic categories: Victims and Victimizers.
Sadly, many people are desperate to be lead and like children want someone to take them by the hand and lead them through life.
They are real targets for apocalyptic religions like the
Watchtower Bible and Tract Society CORPORATION.
Years ago, this religion had people wearing sandwich boards while walking up and down the sidewalk with the slogan: ” Religion is a Snare and a Racket.”
Sadly, these blind followers cannot see the hypocrisy of this religion and how it has morphed into something that would have Jesus in tears. In fact, he would be DF”d for causing “dissention among the brothers”.
Shunning is a very effective tool for keeping people in line as is fear of ARMEGHEDDON.
It you have ever studied a Totalitarian government you will be surprised to see how this religion mimics many
of its attributes, most markedly the fear tactics, informing on one another, and the relentless propaganda via the large TV screens in every congregation.
This religion is invasive, intrusive, and emotionally abusive.

There was a docu/dram in the UK in 1984 called Threads. It depicted a nuclear bomb attack and what happened in Sheffield, England. I remember watching this and it terrified me. Around that time I also remember that school had pills to issue to the kids in case of nuclear fallout. Again, absolutely terrifying. I recall being told what to do in case the siren sounded. All 115,000+ congregations report there attendance monthly to Bethel. Right?

Then on October 9, 2016, we plan a “Do Not Attend The Meeting On This Day”. This date will be on a Sunday, and near the annual meeting date.

Well, I live in Sweden. I’m since several years a faded one. This year I couldn’t quite contain myself as a JW elder doing street witnessing approached me and tried to handle me a leaflet. I accepted it. He knows me, we had a heated discussion where I criticized the organization. That means they’ll now soon be shunning me. However, the rest of my family aren’t JW any longer, so maybe the mental damage following will be limited.

Of course I’ll never give in or bow down to the GB. We live in a democratic society so there’s freedom of religion; but the damage to families is great indeed and SOMETHING, don’t know what, should be done against the Watchtower Society in Sweden by our government.

What revolting religion. Nothing less than a global pest.

to Sven, I understand and read a while back that the WT had applied for government money that the Government gives to Churches such as Lutheran and Catholic since they are “state approved” Churches.
Of course they had to meet certain priorities and conditions just like the Lutherans and others do.
I am pretty sure this is true. This is like their joining the UN and meeting the requirements of the UN. Showing how much they love money and compromise their own teachings for the sake of Money. It is Amazing that on one hand they CLAIM all governments are from Satan and all religions ae from Satan ( except the JW’s ) but they willingly and readily take their money and compromise what they teach for the sake of money! I am sure they do not let the average JW know that they have applied and accept money from the Government and again line themselves up with other Churches. They have to be the biggest Hypocrites on earth,

You are right. This is the fourth! time they applied; and they were subsequently turned down. The reason for this, as stated by our government, is that “Jehovah’s Witnesses do not accept the general values/standards in society”. I agree. They don’t. – Thank you for what you said about Sweden, yes, it is a fine country, but the JWs are not helping us very much. Most of them are kind people but are at the sime time just waiting for Armageddon to kill everyone who refuse to join them. I know this for I was a JW for many years and they have not changed at all.

The Watchtower is an abusive religion.
There is no freedom of thought.
There is no freedom of expression.
There is no freedom of religion.
The freedoms that they so often remind us about in the European courts and within the constitution they themselves deny to their adherents, hypocrites!
For instance, if the Watchtower were to change one of its policies or scriptural understanding, say fractions, overlapping generation, child abuse policy, etc and you were to fundamentally disagree with that change or teaching would either be excommunicated or would have to leave quietly.
Many chose to leave quietly so as to maintain family ties, now it seems this is all due to change, in other words you and your family are being held hostage by Watchtower and what’s worse it’s an absolute abuse of an individuals conscience.
Where is the freedom promised by Christ (and which you sort in the courts) if your his brothers?
    Jehovahs Witnesses and human rights?,

Those greedy pigs know this so if they can persuade the older ones to obey them and unfriend their children and grandchildren, who stands to benefit when the said oldsters die? Someone who has legal knowhow needs to pre-empt this because the only vision these fraudsters have is money coming to them. As old people age and frail they rely on gentle persuasion and can be hoodwinked. If they have shunned their children then they are a wide open bank just waiting to be plundered. Ruthlee

      Sad but true!

For years this site is covenient and well argumented and honest, something you can’t always say about jw.org. What they tell on the site is different and softer than the watchtower.
And look what they have done with the scriptures, just one example:
NEW WORLD TRANSLATION OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES (2013 REVISION)
      Acts 8:37
Now as they were going along the road, they came to a body of water, and the eunuch said: “Look! Here is water; what prevents me from getting baptized?” 37* —— 38 With that he commanded the chariot to halt, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water,

KING JAMES BIBLE: Purple Letter Edition
      ◄ Acts 8:37 ►
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch said, See, here is water. What doth hinder me to be baptized? 37And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still; and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

      This is how they act:
      Matthew 23:1-5
23 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying: 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the seat of Moses. 3 Therefore, all the things they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds, for they say but they do not practice what they say.+ 4 They bind up heavy loads and put them on the shoulders of men,+ but they themselves are not willing to budge them with their finger.

Hi Ruthllee, will let you in on something that happened and is absolutely truthful.
Was in a DF state. . Made the contribution as I’ve said.
When I was returning I use to hide the the KH kitchen, I, like many before in that position, am very shy. So I’d make a coffee and wait till the meeting started. It was used during my reinstatement committee as testimony against me.
Some people are simply truthful :-)
Now having a coffee is a sin

The whole issue of shunning reminds me of the biblical account of what happened after Solomon died and his son Rehoboam succeeded to the throne. Reho’ went and asked the old blokes how he should treat his subjects? And they said – in a kindly way wouldn’t be bad at all. Reho’ decided he needed a second opinion, and talked to all the brown-nosers and young ambitious type men and said what do you think? The young men replied (like the Industrial Relations Dept exec’s of a large Govt Dept that I worked for) give ’em nothing, kick’em in the guts, and laugh when they go down. As Reho’ found out when he followed the young men’s advice he lost 80% of his country that split and headed north. I see the same happening over what the GB is doing right now, people are abandoning the Org in the droves. Fear stalks the KH’s and people are scared of the snitches who dob each other in to the elders over some perceived lack of faith. 1 John 4:18 says “perfect love throws fear outside”. They seem to have mixed up the difference between people and fear, they are throwing the people out and not the fear. What a bunch of nutso’s

This is a very worrying development. I see it as the G.B. tightening their control of the rank and file. I have been ‘ faded ‘ for a number of years now and largely left alone, however I think that will soon change and I will be targeted and expelled officially… However I get much strength from others particularly on this site so I will not cower or be bullied into going back! What will be, will be..

      @ Innocent Son;

I agree with you; it is indeed a worrying development. As a former witness with association back to 1958, this is not the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization that I came to know but a more recently transformed perverted cult like development especially after the 1975 fiasco.

As more and more of the older ones (remembering the administrations of N.H.Knoor and F.W. Franz) die off and age those raised in the truth after the ’75 disappointment’ are now asking questions and are not getting satisfying answers thus leaving in droves. The WTBTS can not stop the hemorrhaging.

If anyone approaches me or my family from the local congregation, (my wife and son also faded three years ago), by mail concerning our Christmas and Halloween celebrations last year or our flying the flag on national holidays, I will mail the official correspondence back unopened with the words “RETURN to SENDER”.

We adamantly refuse to adhere to any of their (G.B.) rules concerning a written letter of disassociation, or meeting them in a congregational star chamber court of inquiry, period. We will no longer “dance to their tune” as we no longer recognize their authority over us or our beliefs!

To quote the Virginia state motto: Sic semper Tyrannis! (thus ever to tyrants!) It is a shortened version of the phrase Sic semper tyrannis ad mortem (“Thus always I bring death to tyrants”).

I love it, Big B! Yes! This is me: raised in the truth, post ’75 and not getting satisfying answers for my questions. I have noticed how many of ‘this generation’ I belong to are leaving.

But there is a definite divide. Some of us are deciding we can’t suffer it and others are doubling down and really going all out to prove their devotion.

Hence the broken families and ruined friendships. And the crazy control tactics that are being implemented and enforced.

I really hope this new policy on shunning will open the eyes of some of my dear friends and not just convince them more firmly that they have the truth and the end is nearer than ever.

I doubt it, though, and it makes me sad.

Also: I lived in Virginia for a while. I remember that motto well.

This is a typical attempt by corporate management to have “self managed teams” with the decline of those interested or shamed to reach to oversee the rank and file.
What does this “new light(tm)” of tightened shunning mean?
Well in my opinion – a virtual judicial committee is now sitting in the heart and mind of each member of this organisation. So here we go again the victimizes judging the victims, the boasters judging the roasters with no hard evidence or holy spirit as claimed in a formal Judicial Committee..
I think the GB have seriously underestimated the utter revulsion and contempt that normal human nature have to being treated like this, it will backfire in grandiose fashion.
Many in mind are only part of this organization for the social experience – it does not offer much else.

Im just curious to know if jw’s stay in the religion out of fear or out of actual love towards jehovah. Im betting on fear.

I am an active JW in good standing. I’ve been baptized for 15 years and have pioneered in the past.

I was not raised a JW and was converted from the door to door ministry. When I was converted and baptized, the severe shunning policies and expected complete unquestioning adherence to everything coming from the governing body was not made clear to me.

I’ve been having questions for a while now. The way my husband’s JW family treated him while he was disfellowshipped was really discouraging. I saw a real lack of love. A lack of imitating Christ. Also the ever increasing promotion of the governing body as if they are Jesus himself, the shunning of people simply for disassociating, the shunning of immediate family members and the discouragement of higher education and critical thinking are all really discouraging.

But this video, this video takes the cake. It outright encourages abandoning your child and using emotional blackmail to compel membership. It lacks the love of the Christ in every way. It goes against natural affection and human decency.

I feel this video may very well be the turning point to get me to leave the organization. Not anything apostates say, but the WTBTS’s own video.

If you have the truth from Jehovah God, you do not need to strong-arm people into faith and demand unquestioning adherence. If you have the truth, the love and kindness and goodness and mercy of the Christ will be evident.

I refuse to abdicate my lifelong search to know God to others and to abandon all critical thought.

I am responsible to Jehovah God alone for who I am as a person and how I treat others. I refuse to treat others in an unloving, ungodly manner because an organization tells me to. If I am wrong, I am confident that Jehovah God will read my heart and know that I am sincerely doing my best to serve Him and be the person I believe He wants me to be.

I do not want my children to ever think that my love for them is conditional. That they must believe a certain way or live a certain way to have my love as their mother. My love for them is unconditional and complete. Today, tomorrow and forever.

      My dear Sarah,
I too have been in a lifelong search to know God. Even as a child I recognized that “God” was not personal enough in prayer. Many things led up to my spiritual and constant longing for truth. At the age of 21, mother of two little boys and while pregnant for my daughter (Rachel), I was baptized in Montreal Quebec. There was so much opposition to my actions it only seemed to validate that I had finally found “the Truth” That was the beginning of 18 years of being a “faithful sister” – later added two more children to my family, the last being born on Memorial night 1983 when I had to be dropped off at the hospital to give birth – 10 minutes before the Memorial Celebration started. I felt so bad that I could not wait until after for my baby to arrive. This story of course goes on with many wonderful times as well as not so wonderful. Always hanging on to the hope and so thankful Jehovah saw fit for me to see “the Truth” ( I always told Him I would do everything in my power to raise children as a blessing to this privilege. Which I truly gave it my all) This is the first time I have ever put “paper” to say how I feel, but if I may, the last four paragraphs in your statement are mine as well.
Currently, I am among those who “faded” away – none of my grown children or grandchildren attend meetings. My beautiful Rachel has been disfellowshipped very young and I feel so responsible for the emotional torment she has suffered not from her birth family but the only other family that I allowed her to have growing up. Not playing victim here but the circumstance around that were so sad and I should have spoken up then! All said, the quest for truth and god does not leave honest hearted people just because they don’t report field service or get to the hall. The problem for me is that when that became my life, I stopped any form of prayer “unworthy” Those of us world wide who “search”, some of us who thought we located the “truth”, some were born into it have much in common, it is hard even impossible to reject completely, we have no other place of refuge as reality makes it quite obvious. It seems to me that Jesus could very well be weeping for the people who are sighing and crying over the detestable things of the system! In a different way than what I for so long hung onto! This is quite a ramble, as I said the first time ever I have opened up, (first time seeing this site- do not wish to be “apostate”, do not know why or where it will go but I could not stop myself. I still use agape as it is a pure form of love -so agape and blessings ( Nancy )

    So true Sarah!
The organisation lacks compassion and empathy. All are in fear of displeasing ‘Jehovah’, (JW.org) at the risk of losing their lives at Armageddon! This is how the org keeps the masses under control, this is why they are obsessed with ‘keeping the org clean’ and this is why the shunning process will continue.
What I asked myself was, ‘Who is the ‘god’ who lacks compassion? Who was I REALLY serving all those years?
I ‘Got out of her’, because I did not want to be a sharer in her sins. I will never go back. I can do without the ‘loving organisation’. I am learning to live again.

      Long post:

This video from the Society on shunning was the final turning point for me. It shows in black and white the level of unmitigated cruelty and psychological torture the Society expects the “faithful” to adhere to.

The lack of logic and scriptural basis for the Society’s position is increasingly apparent. My faith in God is in no way contingent on the actions or lack thereof of others. If it were, my faith would in fact not be sincere.

Previous to this video, I was able to continue to engage in cognitive dissonance and denial. I had convinced myself that the cruel way that I saw disfellowshipped people being treated was a result of human imperfection within the congregation, not actual direction from the Society. I convinced myself that disfellowshipping was done out of love for the fellow Christian, to give them time to quietly mediate upon their relationship with Jehovah.

For years I have prayed that the Society would come out with literature to correct the harsh stance taken within the congregation and that Jehovah would help the Governing Body to see the need for change. For years I have ignored many of the concepts of disfellowshipping and continued to do what I felt compelled to do morally, which was to greet disfellowshipped ones and let them know I was glad to see them, that I loved them and hoped that they would be my brother and sister again soon. And even though I was counseled by the elders about this, I took it not as an edict, but a matter of conscience.

Now I see that this evil stance and cruelty is not coming from imperfect humans within the congregation, but from the Governing Body itself. That this is what they mean by “loyalty to Jehovah.” Something that is in fact wholly ungodly.

This is not an issue of waiting on Jehovah to correct matters. Because the matter is in fact not being directed by Jehovah at all. I know that which is Satanic when I see it and that video is Satanic.

More importantly, the edict it proposes will greatly damage the lives of other human beings. It will rip apart families. It will compel faith by coercion rather than by persuasion. And that is something I cannot in good conscience support.

I will never again go out in the ministry attempting to convert people to a faith that does not allow free thought and promotes psychological torture. A faith that splits up families without a second thought as to the ramifications and without sound Scriptural basis. This coming from a person that just two weeks ago was going out 2 – 3 times a week with my new baby strapped to my chest because I truly believed I was helping people to come to know Jehovah.

For me this decision does not carry the weight I understand and sympathize that it does for so many others. None of my family are Jehovah’s Witnesses, so I do not have that same emotional entanglement that so many others have. Nonetheless this religion has been my identity for more than 15 years and I have made many decisions with life-long detrimental consequences on its basis. That is a story for another time.

Nonetheless, I am at peace with this decision because I know it is the right one and I have never done anything in my life without conviction. I am not worried about Armageddon. I have faith in Jehovah God to be able to read my heart and the sincerity of my intentions, even if due to my own human imperfect I am incorrect in some way.

My husband, who is having his own doubts, partly due to my influence and partly due to his own observations, but who still believes the JWs have “the Truth”, asked recently if I have faith in the “Governing Body” and the “Faithful and Discreet Slave.” I thought for a moment and then I said “No, I don’t. They have been wrong too many times throughout history and even in the last 15 years since I was baptized. I have no evidence that they are in fact the “Faithful and Discreet Slave” besides their own word. However, I do have faith. I have faith in Jehovah and Jesus and the Holy Spirit, in whose name I was baptized. I have faith that the True God Jehovah, the Almighty, is capable of reading my heart and knowing that I did my best to do what I thought was right in his eyes according to the Scriptures, even if I am wrong.” At that moment, my decision, which I have been struggling with ever since I watched this video became clear: I can no longer follow imperfect humans and abdicate my personal responsibility to know and imitate Christ.

I am excited and apprehensive. Everything I have believed up until this point is called into question. Besides the Christ and Jehovah of course. I now must make a thorough and deep study of the Scriptures in light of what they actually say, not what the so-called “Faithful and Discreet Slave” tells me that they say. This will take a lot of prayer and meditation and study. But honestly, I am actually excited to study the Bible for the first time in a long time.

If it weren’t for my husband, I would simply disassociate tomorrow. I do not wish to be bound to any man-made organization or to put on any pretenses. However, I am sympathetic of the fact that my husband does not have any family who are not JWs and that he was raised a JW. So in consideration of him, I am simply going to quietly stop participating in the religion. I hope that this will not cause problems for him and his ability to have fellowship with his family.

@SarahG, love your post. I think a lot of us have felt like you. I know I have. I have seen things that were wrong and I was told, repeatedly, that I should 1) wait on Jehovah 2) focus on my reward and kingdom blessings, and 3) trust that he will repair any damage caused by imperfect humans.

Part of me wishes I still had as much faith as you say you do.

I find myself questioning everything, including the identity of Jehovah himself and my own salvation.

I hope that if there is a God who will judge us, he understands the origins of my doubts and questions. And that he will not hold it against me.

I find that I do not know what to do to serve him. I intend to still live a clean life, morally upright, but beyond that I’m truly at a loss.

You can add ‘attending another church’ to the list of behaviors that can get the inactive shunned without officially being disfellowshipped. I was inactive and not claiming to be a JW for 10 years when I began attending another church. When my JW family and friends found out, I was cut off. I think that’s worth mentioning because the Watchtower goes to great efforts to get authorities to support their freedom of religion, yet they clearly only believe it applies to them, not anyone else. Where was my freedom of religion?

As far as shunning of inactive ones, I have alway felt that it was semantics. I ever understood why a family could and would shun a disfellowshipped family member, and continuing to associate with an inactive relative with almost identical sins but who faded before such sins became public.

I feel for all those who will be effected by these new restrictions, but I don’t find it all that surprising. It does bother me about the extremes they take in dealing with “sinful” ones. They are treated far worse than ones of the world. I have never crossed the street to avoid someone who was disfellowshipped, but I know many have.

For my two brothers it was different. One has fallen away and drinks heavily, swears celebrates Christmas has had several sexual partner but he is not shunned he has just fallen away and yes he is baptised. So this change is long overdue he is no different to me I fact his life style is outrageous. He has been able to still have a relationship with my mother up until her death two weeks ago. My other brother has decided to return to being a Jehovah witness but is engaging in behaviours that are
    forbidden.
So I am now looking at going to get funeral where my two brothers are accepted yet I will be shunned for something I done when I was 16 but who has created the bigger sin?

Hi, I left the religion in april this year, I had an abusive husband who I have now divorced, the body of elders told me I should be working it out as Jehovah hates a divorce..hence me leaving the religion. Since then I have started a relationship with someone else, a non-witness. I was told by my family (who are witnesses) recently that the elders are looking to disfellowship me. However ive also been told a recent change in data protection prevents me from bwing disfellowshipped if I do not attent the judicial meeting..is this correct? If not, is there any way of me avoiding being disfellowshipped?

Hi Christine. I think there is no way of not getting disfellowshipped but what they legally do is get up in front of the congregation and says “so and so is no longer on of Jehovah’s Witnesses” and everybody knows it means you are to be shunned. They used to say years ago, before being sued, is “so and so has been disfellowshipped for unbecoming conduct”.

    Christine-
It is my personal view that if the GB are instructing members to shun non disfellowshipped/disassociated family that have stopped attending meetings then they won’t need to officially disfellowship anybody in the future. The criteria only needs to be if a person is no longer attending meetings and committing ‘serious sin’ then feel free to shun them. No announcement needs to be made that so and so is no longer a Jehovah’s Witness. All future potential lawsuits avoided!
All active JWs will become even more interested in the lifestyles of ones who have ‘fallen away’ so they can determine whether to shun us or not.
How many people who fade or fall away continue the rest of their lives without committing any of the ‘serious sins’ listed? In my experience leaving this religion sent me on a bit of a bender! I partied hard for a while, drank, smoked and used foul language -just because I could! I’ve got it out of my system now. I do still swear occasionally lol and I’ve now got a Christmas Tree. I don’t think those 2 things are sufficient reason to shun me for the rest of my life! It just seems to me like ‘shunning’ is the new sideways route to avoid disfellowshipping but with same result.

I was baptized in 1984, an elder for over one decade and was being groomed to be a Circuit Overseer. I fell into addiction problems with pain medications after a surgery and was disfellowshipped for it. Because I was a high profile elder a lot of things were said and made up about me. The isolation and hurtful things said and done made it difficult for me to come back but I struggled through the humiliation and hardship and was finally reinstated after years. What I’ve seen since then is that one you’ve been stigmatized, it doesn’t go away. Talk of forgiveness is just hot air. All of my family and friends are JWs so I have been faking it for a while now. Recently, I’ve decided it’s time to fade away. This news is truly disconcerting. It is cruel, unreasonable and illogical. I really think it is cult behavior and I can’t believe how much and how long I supported this practice. This is just one of many cracks I’ve started to see. If this is really the way a loving Father and a Creator acts, I don’t want anything to do with him.

Franco, it is so interesting that you were disfellowshipped for being addicted to pain medications. As I recall, I’d say maybe 1/4th of my old congregation are or were addicted to pain medications and if it’s not pain medications, they are on anti-depressants.

Why in the world would your congregation disfellowship you for being addicted to pain meds? Did you steal them or something? It really doesn’t make sense to me, from the knowledge that I have of so many being addicted to pain meds in my old congregation and some of those people have been and are still elders and I don’t recall anybody even being marked for it.

But I am glad you decided to get out. What it takes for a person to see the “truth” for what it is, is an experience like the one you went through.

As long as the congregation calls on a person to answer at the meetings and actually wants to work in service with them and treats them with respect and love like everybody else even when that person isn’t a pioneer or an elder or an elder’s wife etc. and if they aren’t a regular pioneer and maybe are only able to get 3 or 4 hours in service and maybe aren’t real regular at meetings and they still treat that person the same as the regular pioneers, they probably won’t see the “truth” for what it is but that was not my experience at all.

When I went to work in service, the elders seldom ever chose to work in service with me and when the sisters would conduct the meetings for field service (when no brother was there), it was always a pioneer sister who would take the napkin and put it on the top of their head and even though that sister might be twenty years old and I was sixty years old, I was never once considered to lead the group and then to put me in my place, they’d always stick the ones like me in the same car group (the ones who weren’t prominent and maybe only got in service 2 or 3 times a month) and the pioneer sisters and the rich sisters always went in their own car group and they’d always have their calls and studies that they would go together on and the rest of us were never invited on their calls and studies.

I remember a brother telling me that he had the same experience when met for service during the week and he was a baptized brother but didn’t get out that much and he was treated the same way and that is why he quit going out during the week.

I remember one time in particular when I went in service and I was put in a car group with an elder and a new young pretty pioneer sister and the elder drove in his van and he put the young sister in the front seat with him (he was married) and put me in the back and I was never included in the conversations through the entire morning.

That happened to me many times where when I went in service that I was excluded from conversations from the people sitting in the front seat and it was intentional.

They didn’t care about me at all and they were very cliquey and proud of it.

There were many nice people in my old congregation but as a rule, the pioneers were the ones that got called on during meetings and I could raise my hand 20 times and finally get called on but if a 5 year old child raised his hand, he’d get called on right away.

I was put in my place all the time and I closed my eyes to it as people’s imperfections but in reality, Witnesses are taught to be that way because the Society is always preaching that if you want to be built up spiritually, you work and associate with spiritual people and anybody who only goes in service a couple or three times a month are not considered “spiritual” and to be avoided.

Children are encouraged to only spend time with kids who are “spiritual” or act spiritual and the parents will discourage their kids from associating with other kids who don’t seem spiritual.

They are judged by how many hours they get in service and when they answer at the meetings etc. They are even judged by how their Watchtower looks by the marks they make in their Watchtower and if they write down the scriptures in the margins of the Watchtower.

So, Witnesses are taught to be cliquish and people are driven by peer pressure and in order to fit in, they will pioneer and mark up their Watchtowers and encourage their kids to do the same thing so that parents looks “spiritual” because if the kids look “spiritual” then the parents look like better parents.

I saw that all the years I was a Witness but I never held it against Jehovah or the Organization. I always made allowances for the Organization but really in my heart of hearts, I realized it was all being taught by the Society but I just didn’t want to acknowledge it in my brain.

Now I do see it and you do too. Once we see it for what it really is, all we can hope for is that more and more people see it for what it really is and have the courage to take a stand against it, just as Leah Remini is doing in taking her stand against Scientology is doing now.

It takes a lot of courage to take a stand and I for one am proud of refusing to support it any more. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’d be disfellowshipped for disassociation, I would do it but if I disassociate myself, then I would not be able to associate with anybody from the hall or my children.

As long as I am not disfellowshipped, I can still show them love and maybe eventually, something will click in their brains to see that the whole thing is nothing but a sham religion that is just using them to build up their real estate empire.

I may not live to see that happen in my life time but they are young enough that hopefully before they waste their entire lives in that “thing”, they will get out too and salvage at least some of the rest of their lives.

      @Franco,
Try to separate God from this organization. You are blaming God for what has become the culture of bullying in the org. If this is not God’s organization, evidenced by the lack of love, then God is not responsible for the treatment you have received. Learning how to be a Christian is more important than learning how to be a witness. At the end of the day it is the true Christians who receive salvation, not the true witnesses.

Once you differentiate between being a Christian and being a witness, I think you will feel better.

      Hi there.
No, this will not apply to anyone unbaptised. You may find that Witnesses limit their association with you as if you were a “worldly” non-witness, but only people who have been baptised can be officially shunned. Of course, some witnesses are more fanatical than others, so your local experience may vary, but officially the full shunning treatment is only for people who have been baptised.

Ok. So I was raised in the “faith” but I never was really into it. My parents were strict, but not that strict. Luckily, I was never baptized, moved across the world as soon as I could and found my own way. They stopped preaching to me a few years back, which I find wild. Anyway, are they going to stop talking to me soon? I really enjoy our relationship now that I’m an adult with my own family. My children love their cousins and extended family. Because I was never baptized they won’t be shunning me, right?

Ha, just saw the comment above mine. Glad it only applies to baptized. Not sure how I got so lucky. Now, if anyone in my family could escape! It breaks my heart to think one of them would want to, but could never say so.

Hear I am sitting all alone wondering why the brothers don’t bother with me. not a phone call. a visit or bring me any magazine although I’ve seen them in my street.
Oh it must be because I’m an inactive brother,
they wouldn’t do that would they.? I was under the impression that they encourage their brothers to help them come back to the meetings, how sad for them for not helping a loss sheep like myself. I’ve become so depress because of this I’m 75 and live on my own and have health problems, you would think they would ring me up to see if I’m doing OK. It must be that talk about inactive ones at the 2016 Convention that did it. I know of 2 bro. and sis. didn’t go because they were not well they did ring me to see how I was sometime ago, maybe they didn’t know about that talk, I wonder.?

      @Pluto,
You may actually feel better if the witnesses don’t visit you. All the nonsense that they talk. Try reading the Bible and look at it from the aspect of learning to be a Christian rather than learning to be a Christian. Seek out other victims of neglect like yourself for encouragement. There is safety in numbers.
