In recent years, news reports featuring the Jehovah’s Witnesses have been growing significantly in number.
Yet the subject has not been their famous door to door ministry, or coverage of their international conventions, or even of their controversial refusal of blood transfusions.
No, the reports claim that the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, the official name for the organisation that governs the Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide, has been engaged in covering up child abuse within the religion on a massive scale.
But are these reports justified? Is this a case of an innocent religion being unfairly maligned because of the actions of one or two bad apples in their ranks? How many victims are there? Do the Governing Body know about these issues? What’s really going in the multiple courtroom cases that Watchtower has been fighting across the world?
To answer these questions Lloyd Evans, founder and Senior Editor of JWsurvey and activist against cult indoctrination, has produced a painstakingly researched documentary that draws together evidence from multiple sources spanning the past twenty five years.
The film takes the viewer step by step through the issue, from the accounts of the survivors and lawyers involved in the court cases, to the interviews from journalists who have investigated the claims. The film takes us to Barbara Anderson, the whistleblower who first raised the alarm on this issue, and shows footage of members of the Governing Body, the group who lead the Jehovah’s Witnesses, being interrogated under oath on the subject by the Australian Royal Commission, and being grilled by reporters at a District Convention.
The results are eye-opening and deeply concerning, and reveal a genuine risk to both the children of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and also to the children of the general public.
We therefore urge everyone to view this video, and to share it as far and wide as possible to raise public awareness of this issue.
We would also like to add a personal message to all Jehovah’s Witnesses who may be reading this and who wish to view the video, but are concerned that they might be exposed to “apostate thinking.”

Though our politics are often the same, I find myself disagreeing with some of Cedars’ choices of tone or his approach to his particular style of activism.
However, I have no such issues with this video. This is very carefully crafted and well made, and it adopts an honest, approachable, querying (rather than querulous) tone so far (I’m 35 minutes in, at about the Conti case). It patiently builds its case, and allows the gathering facts to power its own momentum toward its point.
It is absolutely vital in my opinion to adopt a patient, caring, even tone in any attempt to examine or take apart the dogma and damage of the Jehovah’s Witness faith. They are inoculated against shrillness and energetic accusation. They are taught to automatically reject examination that has the appearance of countering anything of the Truth they believe in. It is like a city that is not only fortified against invasion, but even the sneakiest of Trojan horses. In my opinion, the most effective examination or criticism is a slow, patient, entirely fact-based one. In other words, truth.
Which is not to say that a loud voice, or a derisive one, doesn’t have its place. But I do not think messages like those carry as far, or penetrate as neatly, as some hope.
Fantastic work, Cedars. Energy and time well spent, and I hope it hits its mark, both in the hearts of those within the organization, and those foreign to it.
Well done, Lloyd on your very clear reporting of this problem. It appears to me that this problem would largely be resolved by the imposition of mandatory reporting to the police. The matter would then be taken out of the organisation’s hands and the two witness rule would become a thing of the past. It is shameful that the men who claim to be part of the kingdom arrangement need the assistance of the police to enable justice to be done but unfortunately, their handling of these matters has been severely lacking and this seems to be the only way forward. They are simply refusing to budge.

He has shunned hus daughter, myself and my sister for this corrupt and deluded false religion. I’m unable to save him from it. The irony of a witness saying ” you sound like a broken record” is mind blowing.
First of all , every religious sect has had some form of child abuse . For the Watchtower I think their failure is denial of it. But my questions here is just where do you draw the line. If abuse occurred outside of the kingdom hall . Is the Watchtower still liable ? Religious sects cant police their members , most of the molestations by JW’s happend not during a religious service in a place of so called worship. Why dont the law go after the Mormons? They have had similar situations where a molester did attend that church , and it remained quiet . So to hammer the JWs for their lack of conscience , or the lack of attention to such matters as being the only sect with this problem is silly.
I don’t believe anyone thinks JWs are the only ones with a child abuse problem, only that they have a problematic way of dealing with it, or not dealing with it. Where to draw the line seems a simple and obvious place. No matter who you are, or what your belief, if you are aware of abuse then you are responsible to make sure it is reported so that the victim can get the help they need, and the predator prevented from further abuse. JW elders try to shirk this obligation off by saying their protection is a “spiritual one.” Fine. But they are still humans, aren’t they? Why does providing spiritual protection mean they can’t also pick up the phone?
MARS – We are all aware of the problem of abuse within many organisations, religious or otherwise. The Royal Commission stated as much to Geoffrey Jackson. As Ren says, it is the way Watchtower handle the problem that is at fault. The reason they are being singled out here is not silly but pretty obvious when you understand that most of us commenting are JWs or ex-JWs. WE need to know!!
Each time I watch the video coverage of the Royal Commission, the statements made by the elders and GB, it makes my blood boil over the lack of empathy for the victims. The reputation of ‘Jehovah’s organisation’ is paramount. What they do not seem to realise is that by their stubborn stance on policy and misapplication of scripture, they themselves have already dragged the ‘name of God’ through the mud.
This unloving, self-glorifying attitude denies the Christ and everything he stood for. Shame on them!
The Catholic Church has likewise been called to answer for scandalous child abuse – no one is denying that. But of course the Watchtower loves to talk about it when it is some other religion deaing with it. They condemn Christendom for all the child abuse, when they themselves are just as guilty of mishandling these cases – hypocrites!
We are concerned about it specific to the JWs because 1.) They claim to be the only true and pure religion on earth and 2.) We still have family and friends that are beholden to them. And it is certainly NOT SILLY to those of who have been affected personally by the abuse that is rampant in this organization.

Mars, if a Jehovah’s Witness abuses somebody outside of the Kingdom hall who is not a Witness, then probably what would happen is that the non witness would turn that person into the police, right? But say, the person who abused the Witness child was another Witness, then instead of reporting to the police what had happened, the victim or their parent would go to the elders to tell them what happened to their child because that is what their conscience would tell them to do to protect other children in the congregation and for advice and comfort from the elders and how and what to do.
You have to realize that congregations are very close knit and like family and just as it would be hard to go to the police if it was your son who molested your daughter, it would be that difficult for anybody in the “family” of a congregation to to to the police with somebody who is in good repute within the congregation and most likely very loved by the congregation.
Then the elders would call in the accused and let that person plead their case. If the accused refuses to admit what they did, then nothing will be done to the accused since the child did not have witnesses to the abuse.
If the child or their parent goes to the police and reports the abuse to the police anyway without the blessing of the elders, then the child and the parents will be held in disrepute for reporting another brother or sister to the police who is in “good standing”.
The child and the parents will be told that they are not to “gossip” about what happened (so as not to slander the good name of Jehovah) and not to spread it around what supposedly happened to their child.
If they do tell anybody what supposedly happened to their child, the whole family will be marked and considered bad association and be told not to listen to them or they will be disfellowshipped, in affect, silencing them against trying to protect the congregation or anybody on the outside as well.
You need to listen to Lloyd’s wonderful video to get the full picture of the “crime” of pedophilia. People call this a “problem” in the JW religion but it’s a “crime” not a problem. A problem would be somebody addicted to porn. That’s a problem, which is disfellowshipable. When it’s something that involves another person, then it’s a crime and when it comes to pedophilia, unless the child can prove what happened to them, then the person won’t be disfellowshipped unless the accused admits what they did and even then even if they admit what they did, the elders won’t disfellowship that person if the person says they are sorry for what they did, in which case the “crime” is never disclosed publicly and nobody knows what that person did unless somebody else comes forward with the same story and then that person “might” get disfellowshipped. The “problem” of porn addiction is treated the same as the “sin” of fornication or adultery and the “crime” of pedophilia has to be proved with witnesses to the crime before the elders will do anything about disfellowshipping the criminal. Even when the accused admits what he or she did, the victim and the family are never allowed to tell anybody what happened, whether the person was disfellowshipped or not on the threat of disfellowshipping.
The elders claim “clergy” confidentiality so they can keep quiet about what happened but the real motive is to protect the Organization’s dignity and respect from the public and anybody else in the congregation who might decide to leave if they knew that there was an active pedophile in their congregation and nothing had been done to protect the children in their congregation and other congregations and the public when that person goes door to door.
When the elders refuse to do anything about a crime against a child and hide the crime from the public, they are aiding and abetting a fugitive from justice and should be held accountable since that person is a danger to the community of children in his company or neighborhood.

One of the real questions in my opinion is, Are the Jehovahs Witnesses trying to hide/cover this historical and present information from authorities/ general public and their own adherents?

By not releasing the information they are putting children at risk, they are protecting criminals, they are acting against justice and against the morality of the scriptures and society they proclaim they are there to serve.

Is there a higher percentage of child predators in the JW organization than in, say, the Catholic Church?

Further, the Catholic Chruch is dealing with a high percentage of Priest to pedophile ratio, I think it was 3500+ or so out of 100 000. Priests, that, conviction rate…that’s outrageous, however, JW’S issues involves potentially ever member so the belief is perhaps as high as 125000 pedophiles in an organization of 8 million.
Not to mention that the Catholic Church has admitted to having these problems and publicly apologized more than once.
The pope actually went to visit some of the victims. When have ANY member of the JW governing body done that? NEVER. They won’t even admit that it’s a serious issue. Geoffrey Jackson had to be pressed by the royal commission to finally say “I concede that child abuse is a problem in the community at large and that at times we have been affected”.

As informative and revealing as this video is, perhaps this is the major point missing from the first question poised, ‘What is the cause?’ Watchtower doctrine fosters a culture of repression of natural sexual drives in JWs. When sex outside of marriage, masturbation, pornography, homosexuality and other common practices are labelled SIN, members are driven by shame and guilt into complying. This leads some into undertaking actions unnatural to their usual sexual expression behavior…
Catholic priests have a higher rate of child abuse than the average public, and this has often been linked to their imposed celibacy and their working in close quarters with children. Heterosexual prisoners often participate in homosexual acts when isolated with members of the same gender. The message is clear: sexual repression often finds an outlet in unnatural behavior…
For those raised from childhood as JW, child molestation may be the only sex act they can “get away with.” Fellow Witnesses won’t trust you with a member of the opposite sex, and interactions with the opposite sex are scrutinized so severely that normal activities like dating or even polite conversation are stigmatized. So when they do marry, many times they have little in common with their spouses, and sex is repressed even inside marriage. But it’s okay for a JW, especially someone serving in a position in the congregation, to take a child under his/her wings for special encouragement. Then things happen. Could it be this culture of denial that is at the root of all this abuse?
@ WS: I think the new brand of “Fast food” JWs are not the Bible Students of yesterday. Many don’t convert completely, and put on “the New Personality”.
Many are living “double lives” and have not entirely abandoned the predelictions of their former ways of life.
You, therefore, may have a point…many have indeed been recruited from the “fringes” of Society. Higher percentages of deviation may well be possible because of the Gene pools they were recruited form. The “slick” WT image may be the sugar coating they need to carry on “under cover”.

Two points to make here concerning the two witness rule.
1: What if one of the two witness is not a Jehovah’s Witness, do they count as a witness to the crime?
2: WT use the two witness rule from the Bible as their reason for it. If the person is found out to be guilt or confess, does not the Bible tell them to stone him to death? They don’t do that nor do they turn him over to the police for some kind of punishment and protect the community in which they live in.
So in saying that they follow the Bible, well they only follow part of it. If they did follow the rest of Gods laws (kill the guilt part)at lest it would stop that person from abusing Children. I am not correct?

1.) Based on my recollection of the JW elders manual, a non-Jehovah’s Witness’ testimony may be considered, but they would not be considered as reliable as a member of the religion. So I guess they count as half a witness?
2.) Picking and choosing which part of the Bible they will apply is standard modus operandi for JWs. The fact that the entire concept of a judicial committee is outside of the scriptural framework seems to elude them. The scriptures say to take the transgressors before the congregation. The also seem strongly entrenched in concepts from the Old Testament. I think this may be related to their strong focus on works rather than faith.

I was thinking on the two witness rule and the stoning to death as well. Like you said, they pick the bits they want… they can’t kill anybody now because of modern day rules but they keep the other bit. It’s like only wearing the top part of a shell suit lol. The whole thing would look crummy but you might just get away with the other half. Modern life however says ‘no’. but they refuse to give up the much loved if not archaic rule.

They are already primed for a situation similar to that of the which occurred during the Salem Witch Trials. Of course they consider disfellowshipping to be spiritual death, so they are not so far off from killing after all.

All United States Companies are liable for Sexual Harassment in the workplace. If someone in the company harasses someone, the company finds itself in court and faces being sued and/or fined. Of course, company executives do not endorse sexual harassment. However, if they do not make company policies to terminate employees who are found out that they sexually harassed someone, they could be in court with their lawyers in a sexual harassment lawsuit.
Money in the millions of dollars could financial hurt such a company. If companies are held to something that they do not endorse, why is religion not held to child sexual abuse? There seems to be a different standard. Religion seems to get away with this with seemingly no consequences. What a double standard the Judicial System has!
After reviewing the Australian Royal Commission, I find that the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society seems to tell the court system what to do. They tell the judges to create laws that they can obey. This is so disrespectful of the judicial system. I wish these judges would set Watchtower Bible and Tract Society straight. The judges should be telling what Watchtower needs to do. Not the other way around. The judges are being pushed around by religions that do not have high moral standards. If I were a judge, I would tell Watchtower right up front that the courtroom is mine and as a judge, I will make the decisions; not you.
Further to your point, Doc Obvious, the Watchtower should not be dependent on the laws of the land to tell them what is good or moral behavior. Rather they should be the superlative example in this regard. But I have known of numerous cases where members could not get justice from the Watchtower society (on any number of matters) until they got the legal system involved.

Too bad most J.W.’s don’t do enough research to stumble across this video. It’s a shame that they are brainwashed to such an extent that their beliefs/policy’s can’t stand up to scrutiny. Truth can stand up to anyone’s scrutiny; only lies become untenable under scrutiny.

If somebody can’t figure out what is happening after that illustration then there’s absolutely no hope for them.

Fact 1: Jehovah has blessed me with another beautiful wife, Loraini Sikivou. Loraini and Jenny had worked together at Bethel in Fiji, and Loraini too was a translator.
Fact 2: Sadly, my dear wife Jenny was not there with me. She had died in 2009, after fighting cancer for ten years. We were married for 35 years.
Fact 3: In 2003, Jenny and I were transferred from the Translation Department in Fiji to Translation Services in Patterson, New York.
Fact 4: Then, in 1996, we were assigned to the Fiji branch, where we helped with the translation work being done in the Fijian, Kiribati, Nauruan, Rotuman, and Tuvaluan languages.
The facts gathered from the article in JW.ORG, Jenny and Loraini would have worked together sometime in 1996 to 2003 before moving to NY. In that case, Geoffrey Jackson would have been introduced to Loraini between the age of 13 to 20 when working when Jenny as a translator.

I found this on the BBC news site but can’t open it. Dated this February it’s an investigation into destroyed letter. It says in part…. The Sunday programme investigates allegations that the Jehovah’s Witness ordered the destruction of documents that could be used during the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse. Was this in contravention of Section 21 of the Inquiries Act 2005 which is punishable by imprisonment?
