Governing Body Member Anthony Morris III

Readers of JW Survey will be familiar with the work of Trey Bundy, an investigative reporter working for the Reveal News organisation. Bundy has been tireless in trying to bring to light the truth behind multiple and long standing accusations of child abuse coverup by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, and has published a number of excellent articles on the subject.

Bundy’s latest article, entitled How Jehovah’s Witness leaders hide child abuse secrets at all costs was published alongside the latest episode of the Reveal News podcast, which also featured this story and contained additional material.

The podcast is entitled Secrets of the Watchtower, and reports the efforts of people like Trey Bundy and lawyer Irwin Zalkin to get Watchtower to turn over its detailed files on potentially thousands of JW child molesters that have never been reported to the law, and who may still be at large.

The podcast is excellent and contains a number of relevant interviews relating to the current state of Watchtower’s legal tribulations, but for me one of the highlight moments is an unexpected encounter caught on audio tape between Trey Bundy and Governing Body Member Anthony Morris III.

To set the background, Bundy has been trying for over two years to get an interview with a Governing Body member on this subject so that he can get their side of the story. So far, the seven members of the Governing Body have shown no interest in talking to the media about allegations of serious sexual assaults on children being covered up inside the religion they control. Meanwhile, Bundy meets up with an ex-Bethilite named Howie, who takes him on a walkabout outside Watchtower’s Brooklyn headquarters and who gives a little background on the inner workings of the Watchtower’s leadership.

During this walkabout, Howie spots none other than Governing Body member Tony Morris walking down the street (a more flippant individual might suggest that this was clearly Jehovah’s hand at work.)

Bundy wastes no time in approaching Morris (who attempts to evade him by crossing the street) and tries to get some comments on the allegations of serious sex crimes being covered up by Watchtower.

What does Morris do? Does he stand firm and make a fearless defence of his organisation’s biblically mandated policies? Does he take the opportunity to set the record straight regarding the accusations and “apostate lies” about sex abuse cover-up that have apparently been besmirching the name of Jehovah?

No.

What happens is that Morris scurries frantically away, feebly throwing non-answers in Bundy’s direction in response to the journalist’s legitimate questions. The encounter ends with Morris rushing through a quickly opened Bethel door and out of sight. Not exactly a dignified way to deal with the questions Bundy posed.

The Governing Body: Fearless before opposers?

This fits an established pattern of behaviour from members of the Governing Body. In total contrast to Jesus and his apostles, and indeed in contrast to the early leaders of the religion such as Charles Taze Russell and Joseph Rutherford, the modern Governing Body appear to have no taste for defending their faith publicly before anyone who might be even slightly critical of them.

For example, take a look at Governing Body member Gerrit Losch. When summoned to defend the child protection policies of Watchtower in court, Losch chose not to take the stand and defend Bible principles as he saw them. Indeed, Losch was apparently so terrified of appearing in a court of law, where he would be publicly cross examined, that he even issued a statement essentially claiming that he had nothing to do with Watchtower, and that the running of the religion had nothing to do with him. Anyone who is even slightly familiar with Watchtower can spot this for the absurd and deceptive claim that it is. In fact, it rather reminds one of the apostle Peter, sweating profusely in the courtyard of the High Priest, frantically denying Jesus in order to save his own skin. Sadly, it appears that Losch has yet to follow Peter’s example and retract his denial.

We also have the example set by Governing Body Member Geoffrey Jackson during the historical 2015 Royal Commission hearings. The commission was initially interested in interviewing Jackson; understandable considering the position Jackson holds in the religion and the gravity of the issues being discussed. However, in an astonishing act of deceit, Watchtower Australia tried to claim that Jackson had no involvement in the formulation or revision of the policies under discussion. Again, anyone with knowledge of Watchtower can instantly see how deceitful and misleading this claim is, and thankfully the Commission was provided with evidence which showed this lie for what it was. It should be noted that attempting to mislead a Royal Commission carries a potential 5 year prison sentence.

Watchtower leader Terrence O’Brien admitted giving these misleading instructions to Watchtower’s legal council, but it is impossible to conceive that Jackson was not aware that this deceitful tactic was being attempted, and it is very probable that he was involved in the decision to attempt it.

When Jackson finally appeared at the Commission, clearly left with no choice but to do so or face legal sanctions, he claimed that he was happy to testify. So happy that apparently he was prepared to risk having his underlings go to jail rather than trouble himself to appear. In contrast to Jesus, who offered himself up on behalf of his followers, Jackson appears more than happy to throw his followers under the bus in order to save his own skin.

It appears that Tony Morris can now join the proud ranks of Watchtower leaders who ran away screaming from questions about child abuse.

What is the Governing Body so scared of?

Trey Bundy: Apparently too terrifying for God’s spirit directed Faithful and Discreet Slave to face.

Why is this relevant?

Well, let’s set aside the clear responsibility that any leader of any organisation has to directly address accusations (and indeed countless proven examples) of criminal activity being covered up as a matter of that organisation’s policy.

Lets focus on something else.

The seven men of the Governing Body claim to be the Faithful and Discreet Slave of Matthew chapter 24; the only authorised channel of communication between Jehovah God and mankind. As members of this extra-special part of the “anointed” class, they claim that they will soon go to heaven as mighty spirit creatures and take the lead in killing everyone on Earth who is not a Jehovah’s Witness.

Given their claims to power, spiritual authority and upcoming super-soldier status, it is interesting to note that there appears to be nothing more terrifying to them than an informed person wielding an awkward question.

Update 13/12/2016 – Trey Bundy discusses the story of Watchtower’s coverup further on KPBS radio. You can listen to the broadcast here.

I love that for all their big talk about Armageddon and enduring persecution and “standing firm for Jehovah” 99% of JWs run away the second someone even asks questions. Good luck resisting all that torture and hardship when the governments attack “jehovahs organization.” This event is “right around the corner” so they might want to toughen up. Jehovah is supposed to prevent them from being tested beyond what they can bear, but apparently the bar is pretty low.

Well said. It appears that the “believers” don’t actually believe. They just run away before someone educates them with facts. To many witnesses the cult is a social club and they just go along with everyone else.

I also have been watching Leah Remini’s documentaries and I did get my oldest daughter to watch the first one and I think it did make her a little uncomfortable because it’s the shunning that is so similar and Scientologists also think they are saving the world and they also think that it’s the loving thing to do to shun those who want to leave the organization.

Most Witnesses will watch Leah Remini’s shows and not relate it to themselves I thinkm because they/we were all made to think Scientology was “crazy stupid” just as the Mormons are “crazy stupid” but we were the only ones who actually had the “truth”.

Most Witnesses won’t relate to the fact that Scientologists are not allowed to go on the internet and look at anything that is critical of that religion because most Witnesses think it’s their choice not to look at anything critical.

It’s not until they actually find something that puts the Society in a bad light and they dare to tell the elders about what they found, is when the reality hits them that they are banned from looking at anything critical of the Society just the same as Scientologists are not allowed to look at anything critical.

Talking of fleeing, I am curious as to why the usually publicity-hungry Lloyd hasn’t posted any pictures or videos of his book launch yesterday.

Could it be-irony of ironies-that he has become a ‘reluctant apostate’ in revealing a possible flop of that event.

Perhaps he could remedy that perception by posting pictures of the queue of eager buyers waiting outside the shop: I’m sure he was overwhelmed by the numbers of people wanting to meet him.

Come on Lloyd, share your great success.

@Joe – petty perhaps but accurate, most dissenters get their therapy, get on with life, rather than seemingly “stalk” their former “girlfriend” (the Watchtower). The ones that protest, and track every move of the Watchtower attract a limited audience, because most of the population–the universe–doesn’t give a rip about a Jeh-who-wit? or the group until they see it has the same issues as their local church group in pedophile ministers and pastors being covered up and excused.

So, yes, the audience for a dissenters’ book, or books, is limited but there is an audience, and has been since the first fiasco with 1843 and counting. [research it…] The bigger audience comes when one tackles the dogma house-of-cards Jeh-who-witses? have built for themselves. But, even with that approach the field is cluttered with evangelicals (snarky ones, too) and the main defender of the faith–the Roman CC and its Jesuits powerhouse highlighting the scriptural fallacies. RCC stacking the deck by assembling what is and is not “official”, so unless a group is going Mormon way by rolling its own “sacred text”–screwed.

And, the jest comment above regarding whether an interpretation of verses is backed by the Watchtower publications is “on point” regarding the views JWs have regarding raw scripture vs. Watchtower interpretation. Tradition binds this group so much, it uses its past literature (to limited extent back into time) to proof “new” articles or twist a change into “we’ve always held…”.

As with any large population JWs and ex-JWs include some that are intelligent people, who attempt to resolve conflict and injustice through dialog. Even though this may be nearly impossible some inside and outside the WT attempt to influence change to better the lives of current and ex-JWs. I’ve looked at this site and a few others like it, read what the site owners wrote, including comments from Cedar, and I believe their motives are to bring about change in the “organization” to better the lives of many individuals, not just their own. I don’t believe they do it as stalkers of their old lover, the WT.

I once heard someone state, “the most dangerous enemy of truth is not the lie but the myth.” Ray Franz believed that. He considered the Witnesses to be “captives to a concept,” the concept that Christ ordained an organization to MAKE MANY DECISIONS that define how all Christians MUST LIVE their lives. The JW interpretation/application of the “faithful and discreet slave” parable helps them define that concept. And even Franz himself was at one time fooled by that JW interpretation, as were all other JWs. Because of the powerful hold that concept has on JWs Franz didn’t believe the dictatorial hold that the gb has on Witnesses would change, even with a future changing of the gb guard.

I’ve found that some of the people who make comments on this site and others like it, and the owners of those sites do have hope. They hope and work for such changes. Don’t you think hope is a good thing?

Yes Openmind; you’ve hit the nail on the head.

The overlapping generations will ALWAYS continue as the Watchtower can never get out of the corner they’ve painted themselves into without their precious organization completely hemorrhaging as more and more adherents leave out of disgust due to promises broken.

Their 1914, 1919 AD & 607 BCE, timelines are a house of cards easily refuted and their “invisible” parousia is just that; totally invisible as no one has as yet seen with their physical eyes or “eyes of understanding” as the Watchtower claims. Rev. 1:7

Now my grandparents, long dead, were part of the 1914 generation. My parents are another the so called greatest generation of WW2, as I am another generation (baby boomers 1 & 2), and my children (generation X & Y) and grandson (generation Z) are yet two more generations.

According to the following site W J Schroer
they list the generations by name and date.
http://socialmarketing.org/archives/generations-xy-z-and-the-others/ there have been from 1912 to the present eight generations.

The Watchtower preaches a “false Christ” which if anyone does the research on the Olivet prophecy (Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21) Jesus lists the order of the four horsemen as he does for John latter on in Revelation. He starts by saying to beware of false “Christs”.

Then at Luke 21:8 “And He said: “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them.”

This verse, in my humble opinion, is the white horse of Revelation, not the “faithful and true Christ” mentioned latter on in Revelation with a sword protruding out of his mouth, but a false one with a bow. The false one that Jehovah’s Witnesses proclaimed before WW1 and was supposedly enthroned at that time. Ask yourself as I did, would Jesus tell his apostles (including John) one thing on the Mount of Olives and something completely different to John on Patmos? Who does Jesus say the white horse is according to the Olivet prophecy? Again, this is my opinion only.

That is why nothing will ever work out on their “timeline”. Why? They have misinterpreted Revelation once again. Can anyone have confidence in Watchtower (Governing Body) interpretations? If they were a race horse would you continue to bet on their winning anything? I sure wouldn’t looking at their past ‘track’ record.

I find that somewhat ironic Big B. Based on the line of reasoning you present, the equivalent of the “false Christ” on the White Horse teaches that the White Horse is the “true Christ.”

Without getting off topic into a debate around scriptural interpretation, I find that a wonderful bit of irony.

And there’s more where that came from, Winston.

The Bible must be true because it’s so easy to understand, contains no contradictions, is completely literal and absolutely everybody following it is on the same page. It’s God’s word so it must be true and accurate and perfect because God is perfect.

            @ Winston Smith:

Oops, should have said the rider of the white horse; not “Who does Jesus say the white horse is according to the Olivet prophecy?”

Anyway, I think this explains the conflict in the interpretation posed by the FDS and why 100 years have passed and no Armageddon; namely mis-identification of the rider of the white horse.

Oh, another question; according to the timeline in the 2013 July 15 Watchtower, can it truly be said that Jesus is ‘ruling in the midst of his enemies’ without the full accompaniment of the 144,000 without their ‘rapture’ before Armageddon? This, if true, would make the date of 1919 erroneous for the start of his reign.

Anyway, a happy, prosperous, and safe New Year to all!

In Leah Remini’s Scientology and the Aftermath, she has included a link to aftermath letters. All sorts of letters are presented on Scientology’s written right ups of “Apostates”, or as Scientology states Suppressive Persons (SP) that are interviewed by Leah Remini. Some of these individuals have been “Disconnected”, or shunned.

One of the documents is the Church of Scientology International’s Statement on Disconnection. A very interesting document. After that document is Scientology’s reasons that Shunning is a widely accepted practice, a document called A Comparative Summary of Shunning in World Religions is introduced on the web site. Guess who appears on the list of religions? You guessed it. The Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The Leah Remini Scientology shows Aftermath are so good and the similarities between that religion and the JW religion can’t be denied but of course JW’s won’t see it.

I wonder if any JW women at Bethel have had abortions so they could stay at Bethel like Scientologist women have to do if they want to stay in the Scientology religion?

According to the Leah Remini show, if anybody in the Sea Org gets pregnant and wants the baby, it sounds like what JW’s consider taking blood as disassociating themselves and will be kicked out and shunned by all their former friends and relatives. They also can’t make friends with anybody else who aren’t Scientologists the same as Witnesses can’t so when they leave, they leave with nothing and nobody and that is if they can successfully escape.

Scientologists have to go to 5 assemblies every year where they hear lie after lie about how they are the “fastest” growing religion in the face of the earth and all those people are being lied to and believe the lies just the same as Witnesses believe it when they have to go to all their assemblies to hear how they are the fastest growing religion on the face of the earth, but when you look at the videos from the Society, it’s kids that are being baptized. It isn’t coming from outside at all. Maybe that’s why Witnesses are discouraged from abortions because then there would be no growth at all. Pause the latest jwbroadcasting show when they show how there’s 5,000 being baptized every week-end and all you see are little kids coming up out of the water. Sick!!!

Scientology makes all their money from within the members, making them think that they are saving the world and if they leave, they are personally responsible for the destruction of mankind, which lays the guilt trip on them the same as Watchtower does to all it’s members. Leah Remini says how they give up their careers and vacations and their lives for the religion which is nothing but made up lies which is the same as the jw religion.

Also, what was brought out in episode 5 of Leah Remini’s shows is that to keep it’s tax exempt status, they reinvest all their money into real estate just as Watchtower does. I wonder if those places that Watchtower buys up are also empty just as the Scientology centers are empty?

The similarities go on and on but Witnesses won’t see it. They have too much to lose, just as those of us have had to go through when we left. They don’t want to believe that they gave up their lives for a lie.

One thing though is that we aren’t the only ones who have lost our lives to a destructive cult, not that it helps much. We might not have had to have abortions but we have lost lost loved ones from not taking blood and every day that we spent in the cult was one day we will never get back.

The Scientology documentary is excellent and if anybody can watch it, it reinforces in our minds how much better off we are now that we have woken up and left.
