If you live in the United States, could this be what your next local kingdom hall will look like?
If you live in the United States, could this be what your next local kingdom hall will look like?

On Saturday, January 31st a special meeting was held for all elders in the United States Branch Territory. A letter sent out in advance advised elders that the meeting would be to unveil “a new, dramatically different Kingdom Hall design.”

Since then, images of the proposed new standardized “cookie cutter” design have been leaked on an ex-JW forum. They show a building that appears to have been envisioned with commercial applications in mind if the building ever needs to be sold in future.

One elder’s notes from the two-and-a-half hour meeting, also leaked online, indicate that elders were urged by Governing Body helper Robert Luccioni not to become like the Israelites who complained after leaving Egypt.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 was read, which says: “Do not say, ‘Why were the former days better than these?’ for it is not out of wisdom that you ask this.” The application was made that elders should not dwell on the past or point out flaws in the new arrangements.

Leon Weaver, also a Governing Body helper, then revealed that there had been heated discussions within the US branch committee through the night as to whether the design for the new standardized kingdom halls was to be residential or commercial. Eventually, however, it seems all voted in favor of a commercial-style model – with windows.

JWsurvey has already reported on the changes that are being introduced by the Governing Body regarding how kingdom halls and assembly halls are built and financed. These changes involve all congregations sending a fixed donation to Watchtower every month, even if they were not previously in debt, and relinquishing all surplus funds to Watchtower.

Though the majority of rank-and-file publishers seem to have greeted the changes under the false impression that Watchtower is waiving the debts of congregations, not everyone has fallen for it.

On my Facebook page I was sent the following PM by an active publisher, who is happy for me to share it while asking to remain anonymous…

Hey John. I’m a baptized JW. I created this hidden account for myself for obvious reasons. I’m married to a zealous sister…my family are 90% JW and I was raised one from birth.

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately. I have been doing a lot of digging around and watching videos on YouTube… including yours on this organization. Reason why? Some things just don’t seem right. Some things just don’t seem logical..etc.

Last night a letter was read at my KH – by the way I’m from [country deleted]… The letter said that from now on, all contributions we make will be towards one global fund… so no more KH building fund box, world wide work box etc. It’s just one contribution that will go into a global fund. Now there was a resolution from the headquarters to be passed by all congregations that each congregation will send a certain amount to this global fund monthly.

The amount that was set for our congregation was [equivalent to] US $113. Keep in mind this is separate from Congregation expenses. We have around 70+ publishers. I thought if our brothers are struggling to pay congregation expenses… how are we going to keep this up monthly? Anyways they say it will go to everything like disasters, building halls, printing etc.

BUT THIS IS WHERE I WAS DISTURBED. AFTER THE MEETING I WAS CLEARING THE CONTRIBUTION BOX… AND I WAS TALKING TO AN ELDER ABOUT THE LETTER WHO IS THE SECRETARY… JUST TO UNDERSTAND IT FULLY. HE SAID TO ME… “WE WILL NEED TO KEEP IT UP SO THAT JEHOVAH’S SERVICE WILL BE CARRIED OUT… FOR EXAMPLE…I DON’T KNOW IF I SHOULD SAY THIS YET… BUT IT WILL BE NO SECRET SO I GUESS I CAN. DID YOU KNOW THAT LAST WEEK ALL CIRCUIT OVERSEERS GOT A BRAND NEW 2015 RAV4 FROM THE SOCIETY?”

I SAID “WHAT!!!!” HE SAID “YES BRAND NEW.” SO I SAID “BUT THE CO WAS HERE TWO WEEKS AGO WITH AN OLDER 2001 CAR?” THE ELDER SAID…”WELL I GUESS HE HAS 2 CARS NOW”… IN MY MIND I’M LIKE WHAT!!! THIS CANNOT BE RIGHT!!!
I AM STRUGGLING TO PAY MY BILLS AT HOME..I’M ENCOURAGED BY THE SOCIETY TO KEEP LIFE SIMPLE…DON’T START ANYTHING THAT’S GOING TO TAKE UP TIME LIKE A NEW BUSINESS EXTRA HOURS AT WORK ETC… AND NOW YOU ARE TELLING ME I MUST CONTRIBUTE MY MONEY SO THAT CIRCUIT OVERSEERS CAN DRIVE BRAND NEW CARS…ON TOP OF THAT…THE ELDER SAID THEIR SUVS WILL HAVE FREE SERVICING EACH TIME IT NEEDS IT AND ANY PARTS THEY NEED THIS WILL ALL BE PAID FOR BY THE WATCHTOWER SOCIETY.”

KEEP IN MIND IT COSTS AROUND $217 TO SERVICE ONE OF THESE SUVS EXCLUDING PARTS. I WAS THINKING IN MY HEAD…YOU MEAN PAID BY ME AND OTHER POOR BROTHERS WHO EITHER HAVE TO WALK EVERYWHERE BECAUSE WE HAVE TO HAVE A SIMPLE LIFE OR IN MY CASE I HAVE AN OLD LITTLE CAR THAT NEED LOTS AND LOTS OF PARTS RIGHT NOW… I DON’T EVEN HAVE A/C IN MY CAR, AND I’M TO GIVE MY MONEY TO HELP BUY 2015 SUVS AND MAINTENANCE…

CAN’T BELIEVE THIS… MY WIFE THINKS ITS A BLESSING FROM JEHOVAH…BUT I CAN’T TALK MY FEELING BECAUSE WHENEVER I DO..SHE SAYS I’M AN APOSTATE! …WHAT DO YOU THINK? CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ON THIS? I’m not sure if the COs only in [my country] got 2015 SUVs or it’s a worldwide thing…but it’s shocking to me. I’m just in a puzzled state right now.”

Publishers like my friend above can expect to be even more bewildered as they see Watchtower continue its downsizing trend. Where once the organization prided itself on huge investment and global expansion – consolidation, thrift and cost-saving is now the order of the day.

Watchtower is now big on style, low on substance.

And with this new standardized kingdom hall, it appears Watchtower has one eye on what publishers will expect in return for accepting the new stealth-tithing arrangement, and one eye on making kingdom halls as marketable as possible should they eventually need to be sold off.

@Pickled brain, in 1975, we had 2 couples who were disfellowshipped for only 3 months each time and got reinstated because the committee was so scared they would be killed at Armageddon if they weren’t reinstated quick enough. Now it takes longer because of the “overlapping” generation.

@Robert. Are you saying that we are being “mean” to the Organization? I can’t think of enough things to say convey how I “really” feel about them. I thought we are being really lenient. In my opinion, I feel the Governing Body all need to be in jail! That’s what they did to Jim Baker when they found out about all his schemes to defraud people. Being “ignorant” is not an excuse.

My next words may sound a little Racist/bitter inclined.

Does it ever peeve you that the WT society just seems to emulate the “American” brash and bullying business style?

PEOPLE have become superfluous to material wealth. American foreign policy is under fire throughout the world.

In May, my health not withstanding, I shall be flying back to stay in my favourite hotel in CUBA. This hotel is supported, amongst many others, by Canadian doctors who “smuggle” in Medical materials for use in local hospitals. It defies the American embargo imposed 50 years ago. Venezuela provides much needed Oil in exchange for Medical care by the more than 72,000 doctors, who have been trained on the island.

I am sick of American haughtiness and attitude to people outside the 49th parallel… can it not see how the rest of the world is turning against its arrogance?

Watchtower has turned my former faith into a Marketing tool for business expansion…maybe this is the business model for the “New World Order?”

I am ranting (shut up you old fool)

Which could prove embarrassing to a visiting brother or sister who weren’t aware they were Disfellowshipped!! MORE NEW LIGHT After 60 YEARS of making Disfellowshipped sit at the Back of the Hall!!

I am so relieved to say that something happened within my family, that made me so depressed I was too ill to go to meetings, I saw no-one in that time, no Elders, No Phone calls etc. because Of their indifference, I was able to start thinking for myself again and never went back. @Feelingsicktomystomach. Last spring I had to be gone for about a month and didn’t go to any meetings and I couldn’t imagine how much less depressed I was during that time and then when I returned back home, I went to only one meeting and the very same depression came over me. By that time, I had read Crisis of Conscience and had started “waking” up. It still took me several months after that though, before the fear that “maybe” the Witnesses are right and maybe the Organization really is Jehovah’s one and only true religion and I’d be killed at Armageddon for walking away but that fear is finally gone now but all I have to do is start reading a watchtower and that same fear starts coming over me so I know how it works on a person’s mind, so all I read now is stuff that points out all the lies. I have to keep doing that so I don’t fall back into that old, fearful thinking.

I wonder if a sound-proof back room is included? It would also have state of the art defences against any recording of what went on within!

The new Kingdom Hall design is fatally flawed! The new design seems not to have a basement! Where are the friends supposed to cower while angelic hordes destroy the faithless???

The new design is just like the religion that created it. It makes the eye just slide off of it. It could be any COMMERCIAL building. It has no features that please the soul.

Although I think that other religions spend too much money on their places of worship, at least they are architecturally interesting and reflect some kind of special purpose.

I think the WTBTS is aware that they are have entered the end game of their traditional business model. Easily flipped property is a great way forward for them.

I wonder why a Christian religion has decided to buy their building materials exclusively from China? This is a country WHERE THEIR PREACHING WORK IS BANNED.

Think about that for a moment, folks. Purely for financial reasons, the WTBTS has chosen to give their money to a regime that is in direct opposition to their god’s purpose!

The WTBTS take every opportunity to disgust us with its moral choices. Every time they choose a path that exposes them as an Anti Christ.

The WTBTS is dying. It is trying to survive as an information control cult in the Information Age!

I for one am enjoying immensely their fall.

Some in my family are in IT and earning six figure incomes, the go over seas twice a year,if they were asked they would donate their holiday money without question,so Excelsior the end is not yet,but it is coming.

@Excelsior. Your point regarding buying all materials from China
reveals the essence, the meat and potatoes of what this org, is

China has acted hypocritically, facilitating the growth. of a religion
it’s opposed to, simply for the profit motive. The W,T,S are hypocrites,
trading with a regime that has imprisoned J,Ws. Again principle is
sacrificed for the purpose of profit. “Peas in a Pod”.

Maybe they”l try to snow us with the excuse of improving relations.
But they know that China a communist country, will never allow an

But because house is in my name my mum couldn’t sell it when he died,so I renovated it raised the value of it and bought a better house, all my other JW family live in rentals,Ime the only one that owns property, and now that everyone is ageing reality is biting hard,I’ve made it clear that none of them are moving in with me,yep, thanks to dear old dad who actually met the Judge when he was touring Australia back in the early 30s.

Before I left the organisation about 12 years ago, I noticed that the elders in a congo I was visiting all seemed to have expensive late model cars. One elder in particular had been hanging onto some property and it was sold for around 2 million dollars. It seemed to be a trend I realised in most congregations in our district. It was blatant materialism and that is why this is no surprise that the elite circuit overseers want to travel in expensive luxury and indulgence at the expense of the poor. What a disgusting “showy display of one’s means of life”, to quote from their own bible. I always thought there seemed a shortage of humility amongst the hierarchy of the organisation. That was part of the reality that made me leave.

  • February 6, 2015 at 3:40 am
    Permalink

@Meredith, we had a Circuit Overseer a few years ago that was giving a talk at our congregation and said that it was showing disrespect to drive a car in service that had rust on it. I think it’s the “look” that the Society wants the world to see when Witnesses drive up in service. They want “worldly” people to see what seems like a people who have money when they drive out in service and they know that people are impressed by money.

I think not charging for the magazines counteracts the thought that people at the doors think the reason why we could afford nice cars was because we were making money selling the magazines. Once, right down the road from where our new Kingdom Hall had been built out in the country, when we were charging 50 cents for the Watchtower and Awake, he said that is how we built our new Kingdom Hall was from the selling of the magazines. Of course, we knew that we were spending at least $10 for gas just to show up in their driveway, but there was no way he’d believe me that we didn’t buy that new Kingdom Hall with selling of the Awake and Watchtowers.

Also, when the Society decided to provide the Circuit Overseers with new cars every couple of years, we (all the congregations in our circuit) were charged for those new cars and that was budgeted in our monthly accounts, as well as their health insurance. The congregations have been paying for those new cars and health insurance for at least 20 years now. Also at least 30 years ago, in our old congregation was paying about $500 a year to a “worldly” insurance company for liability and our congregation and all the congregations throughout the world were asked to take out that insurance through the Society and that cost was budgeted into our monthly accounts. But if anything should happen where a person gets hurt on our property, the Society will use their lawyers not to pay out and that person will be shunned. I have seen that happen too. Most Witnesses won’t take the Society to court to fight to have their hospital bills paid out if they get hurt at the Kingdom Hall or out in service. They will pay it out of pocket first. So, that insurance money is all gravy for them.

Back in the 50s the only person who had a car in our cong, was the
cong, servant, it was an old Morris 10, it was a virtual rust bucket.
He would take car groups out to F,S, and one day a rather overweight
sister got into the car, and her foot went straight through the floor.
He always said, “That car ran on faith”. A good man but sadly deceived.
A further sad detail, when he died, a short while later his daughter
    committed suicide.

Our K,H,was a wooden hut, rented from a bowling club, it was locked
by a padlock and local youths would wedge a piece of wood in the
staple then start banging on the door, but we couldn’t get out to them.

It’s a different religion today, many changed teachings, a lot more
enforced control, and centralised control, the slick corporate image,
fleet leasing of cars, standardised buildings. Religion is just the product
that they market, more damaging than healing! an incidental!

@Ted, I don’t know about where you are but in the 60’s, my first congregation was really small with a really small Kingdom Hall and it was more like a family than today. People, in those days liked to visit with one another etc. but today I don’t think so. In those days I remember people being able to discuss different articles in the Watchtower and more free to talk about them if they necessarily agreed with them or not, but really if you look at the old Watchtower bound volumes, even then a person could be called on the carpet for doing that but I think families wouldn’t be so quick to turn in a close friend or family member for apostasy then in those days. That fear didn’t happen till the 1970’s when Ray Franz wrote his book and the Society became dictatorial and started really cracking down on any discord, even making it a rule that nobody could get together to discuss the Bible unless it was at a congregation meeting. I remember that era well and my husband even gave a special needs talk to the congregation about how certain ones were meeting together to talk about the Bible and how wrong it was because we had a sister in our congregation who did that and got disfellowshipped for it. I didn’t know what was behind that change to a dictatorship then but now I see it.

What used to be a religion that a person could join and feel somewhat “free” now has become a religion that makes a person “afraid” to say anything to anybody about anything. I think if people in the “truth” get together today, it has to be really sterile conversations.

The Kingdom Halls are more modern and bigger but they are sterile inside and out and all the people going to those Kingdom Halls have been rendered sterile by the Society’s many rules and regulations.

My last comment made me remember back when we “placed” the magazines for 50 cents and we had to pay for them at the magazine counter before we took them out but we would ask for a 50 cent “donation” from the householder but then we weren’t allowed to keep that 50 cents. We had to put all that money in the contribution boxes. What a scam!!!

I remember the good old days in the truth as well, back in the late 60s my family was living in South Africa,at the time aparteid was REALLY strong,it was slightly less right wing than Nazi Germany, anyone who wouldn’t obey the government was treated badly, anyone who protested was either in jail or just “disappeared”
Of course back then they had compulsory conscription so all JW bro where imprisoned as objectors, the line was drawn either you joined the military for 3 yrs or went to “detention barracks” military prison.
There was always this feeling of us and them and it felt like a real David and Goliath situation, those days are gone as I think conscientious objectors are treated differently and how you protest is now a “conscience” matter, the “truth”changed along the way so the stand taken by all those young bro is not based on “present truth”anymore,I wonder how that makes them feel?
What is even more amusing is that the GB tactics now are more like apartheid was back then,if you don’t do what we say we punish you,it really has changed from a group of worshippers into a corporation.
My old man even talked about this when I was still a teenager, back then there where about 2 million jws,he said to me on passing one day “when you get bigger the problems will start”
