Dear Watchtower, THANK YOU for your “tight pants” copyright complaint!

thank-you-tight-pantsBy now I’ve written a number of articles about Watchtower, but it’s been a while since I’ve written anything addressing the organization directly.

A recent development, however, has moved me to write my former religious leaders a sincere open letter of gratitude, as follows…

Dear Watchtower,

As you may know, I am a passionate advocate against the damage you are inflicting on countless current and former Witnesses with your profoundly harmful policies on child abuse, shunning, higher education, domestic violence and blood transfusions.

I certainly don’t expect you to help me with my work of raising awareness of your dangerous, cult-like attributes – so whenever you do assist me in this respect I feel duty-bound to express my gratitude.

As you know, you recently lodged a copyright takedown request with YouTube for one of my “Getting To Know” videos featuring Tony Morris’ first rant about tight pants during his branch visit in Rome.

Oh, you know! The one where he scolded his audience saying “you chuckle, I don’t think it’s funny, I think it’s DISGUSTING!”

tight pants

The video against which you so vehemently protested was a shortened version of the video below, minus the hilarious skit at the end with Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon…

It goes without saying that by issuing a copyright takedown request for this video, you are both (1) claiming ownership of its outrageous content (I assume on Tony’s behalf), and (2) showing the world that, like any good cult, you will move mountains to censor any information that makes you look bad – even if it originates from you.

I honestly couldn’t be more profoundly appreciative, and hence I will not be challenging your copyright claim – even though my video quite clearly falls under the “fair use” laws.

Besides, I set up the separate “JW Survey” channel precisely to shelter my John Cedars channel from this sort of petty, retaliatory action from you (which I have already experienced two years ago for uploading a song about Sparlock).

So, despite getting a strike against my back-up YouTube account, I can honestly say there is no real harm done.

On the contrary, you have done me a huge favor by showing the world how litigious, surreptitious, banal, cowardly, and ashamed of your own paranoid rantings you are despite being “God’s one true organization.” Readers of this website who would be otherwise ready to leap to your defense will have a hard time imagining Jesus filing a copyright complaint against someone for repeating his own words.

Far from it, Jesus (who you claim to be head of your organization), was apparently only too happy to take responsibility for his own words and own up to them because, as he put it, “I have not spoken of my own initiative, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak.” (John 12:49, New World Translation)

If you were truly “God’s organization” issuing life-saving proclamations through the holy spirit’s guidance and direction, you would be delighted that I am assisting you by spreading the words of one of the few members of your revered “faithful slave,” no matter how controversial these words might be.

Instead, your clearly-demonstrated desperation to conceal your own words (because you know full well they expose how backwards and deluded one of your leaders is) speaks volumes.

You are doing my work for me, and I can’t thank you enough!

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude that you have not sacked or disfellowshipped Tony Morris, as I once feared you might.

If the Governing Body had done this, it would have sent a clear message to all Witnesses globally that it takes its responsibility to be “faithful and discreet” very seriously, and will not tolerate one of its members laying down arbitrary rules without basing anything on the scriptures – behavior it is happy to denounce as “Pharisaical” when observed in other religions.

The fact that you have kept Tony Morris in his position despite his embarrassingly inappropriate rant against clothing (at such a prestigious event as a branch visit in front of more than 1 million Witnesses) again shows thinking Witnesses the true nature of your organization.

Your leaders are deluded and arrogant, drunk with their own power, and you are powerless to prevent them from “making an ass” of themselves (to quote Rutherford) – especially as their lust for prominence seems boundless. All you can do is mop up the damage afterwards and try to keep things hushed up.

And don’t think the fact Tony’s talk didn’t make the cut on JW Broadcasting’s “Programs and Events” page hasn’t gone unnoticed either.

So, thank you Watchtower. I really mean it!

Without your bumbling incompetence you would be a worthy adversary. Instead you’re proving something of a pushover. Every time you shoot yourself in the foot like this, you make my activism work far more easy and enjoyable.

Your grateful opponent,

WHAT is IRONIC is that 1984 is Exactly 70 years from 1914,The Society’s terminology for ‘A GENERATION ‘ back in 1984 UNTIL TIME RAN OUT for that OLD LIGHT!!!
@Shanti .Yes I read Animal Farm & 1984 for English Literature for ‘O’ Level Exam Plus Studied A Level History on Dictators Such as Stalin,Hitler & Mao in China .All these Dictators had ministries of Propaganda Josef Goebel for Hitler & Manipulation of information just like the Dictatorial Governing Body . Am I being HARSH in my assessment?? Millions of JWs are sacrificing their LIVES to The Governing Body.If they have New Light 5 times on teaching such as Generation meaning & if you don’t agree & say so openly you are as good as DEAD in their Eyes as that is Apostasy!!You lose your Old life CUT OFF from Everyone you’ve known LOVED & CARED ABOUT!! …. DICTATORIAL to say the least!!
But Very Very Sad The Manipulation of The Human Mind & Very Wicked!I I would every young JW GET an EDUCATION…PLEASE,PLEASE if you are reading this site!

@Pickled brain. I echo your advice. Please, anybody who has children, encourage them to get an education!! Don’t let the Organization make you think it’s selfish. You need to support yourself. It’s not selfish.

If anybody wants to watch that old Twilight Zone television show, I see you can watch it for free. Go to Wikipedia and type in: Eye of of the Beholder. At the end of the article it says external links and it’s the first one. click on that first one and you can watch that show. It’s really quite famous and really interesting.

An Example of MANIPULATION is Jehovah is King.Jesus is King in 1914 but in 33c.e Jesus was given by Jehovah ALL authority in heaven and on earth(Matthew 28v18) But in 1914 the Devil was thrown down to the earth yet the Devil has been ruler of the world for thousands of years (Matthew 4v8,9) satan offered all the kingdoms of world to Jesus but Jesus will also take up reigning as King after Armageddon for the 1000year reign of Christ then he will hand it back to Jehovah ??? Confused but at the end of the 1000 years will Jesus still be king and in 33c.e was he King of just the Anointed(144,000) Even MORE CONFUSED. This is the ART of Mind Control & PROPAGANDA where the ordinary JW becomes so CONFUSED JUST Leave All interpretation to The Governing Body or is that The Faithful Slave or until recently the Governing Body were Representatives of the Faithful Slave.!!! This is Manipulation of Information !! Very very Clever so JWs throw their hands up in their air, become mentally lazy & leave all their thinking to the Governing BOTTY???or is that Governing Body!

Shanti, you seem like someone that I would befriend very quickly, it’s just that I live on the other side of the world to you. I too would like to talk to someone who is in the same position but I just don’t know who I can trust. That’s the negative impact that this religion has on people. Those that are in or out, you start looking at each one connected to the religion with suspicion not knowing where they’re at or what their true motives are. It’s such a shame because it makes a person feel insecure. That’s why I completely severed any communication with anyone in my area still in or even inactive. It’s just that I feel safer with people outside of this cult. I know where I stand at least. They don’t owe me any explanations & I don’t them, there’s no mind games.

PS keep your comments coming, you word your experiences so well.

@Grace. If we read ACTS 15v1,2 the early Christians were hotly disputing & arguing about the Doctrine & Validity of Circumcision .Now if this is ok in the bible to Argue & Dispute about Doctrine why can’t we all follow their example & intensely dispute & argue freely about other Doctrines without fear of Shunning& Ostracism !!

There’s another tactic that I thought of if I ever get another chance to meet with the elders and it goes like this:

Do you like to play mind games or riddles? I do. You are asked a simple question and you have a choice of 3 answers. Which is the correct answer, A, B, or C? One that I like and is so simple but shows how our minds can be tricked goes like this:

Carl is going to put 3 coats of paint on his bike. Which coat goes on the first coat?
    A) first
    B) second
    C) third

The answer is 2nd. I don’t know if I typed it the way I see it in the quiz that I have seen on Facebook, but a person would naturally put either first or third. The 2nd coat doesn’t seem right, but the mind is tricked by it and you have to read the sentence out loud to see the correct answer and sometimes you have to read it several times. That’s what it’s like when you read the Bible with preconceived ideas like Jesus died on a stake and not a cross. When we read the scripture that Thomas wanted to see the holes in his hands where the “nails” were, a Witness isn’t going to see “nails” in the plural. That is because the mind has been manipulated by the Society to not see it. There’s plenty of examples in the Bible that Witnesses won’t allow their brains to see that the Bible and Watchtower differ in doctrine.

If I can show the elders that visually how our minds don’t see things because of preconceived ideas implanted in our minds, maybe then they might understand what I am trying to tell them.

I know it won’t register on their minds at the time, but maybe later, if they have time to think about it, it might start to register in their thoughts that maybe they should start reading their Bibles more closely, just in case I am not as “crazy” as the Watchtower wants them to think I am.

I know it’s hopeful thinking but I think it will be fun to at least try. If you listen to M.James Penton’s speeches, he had 80 that left with him and he was a 4th generation Witness and an elder and at his “trial”, there were fist fights that broke out because there was such heated disputes over what he had found out and had convinced so many elders that they were being lied to by the Society.

I am not sure how the riddle goes but it could be that the question ends up with: which coat goes on the first? I will have to look it up again to see how it goes. I know I had to do the quiz over and over again to see why it was the 2nd coat.

@Anonymous. You have hit The Proverbial NAIL on the HEAD in regard to Thomas & in Reference to ‘Nails’ in scripture but Also the PATIBULUM which is the Crossbeam to the upright STAKE weighed 100 pounds and this is what Jesus carried. The Actual Stake was left in the ground at place of execution which would have been too heavy.the First century Historian Josephus in his writings actually mentions THE CROSS not a stake.A brother in a public mentioned JESUS being killed on a stake when he quoted from Josephus and I confronted him & said it says CROSS and the brother admitted to me he changed the Josephus quote to say Stake instead of Cross. In other words The Brother LIED in his public talk so the audience wouldn’t know the Truth of what Josephus said so as to fit the Governing Body view.!!How Deceitful can you get!!!

@Pickled brain, I wanted to go back to what you were talking about a couple days about the Milgram experiment with electric shock and peer pressure. I am quoting directly about that experiment from Wikipedia:

“in this experiment, 26 out of 40 participants administered the full range of shocks up to 450 volts, the highest obedience rate Milgram found in his whole series. Thus, according to Milgram, the subject shifts responsibility to another person and does not blame himself for what happens. This resembles real-life incidents in which peopl see themselves as merely cogs in a machine, just “doing their job”, allowing them to avoid responsibility for the consequences of their actions.”

From what I read, Milgram did this experiment to explain how so many people were involved in killing the Jews during World War Two. It also explains other atrocities in the name of the government and just following orders.

The 1949 George Orwell book 1984 was also in response to atrocities committed during World War Two as well. The 1960 program from the Twilight Zone entitled Eye of the Beholder was also about how peer pressure can make people’s minds can play tricks on them.

The Society has to absolutely know how evil it is to disfellowship anybody who disagrees with the Society. They have to know how many suicides it causes and how much pain it causes, but they don’t care. Are they also putting it on a “higher” source the blame for all the pain, the same as all those who supported Hitler in killing all those people in gas chambers??? Why are they blaming Jehovah, if that is the case???? Are they passing the buck in their own minds so that they can sleep at night????

How can anybody watch the latest JW broadcasting and not see how evil it is that one poor widow with 3 small children only has enough money to put plain rice in front of her children and all the elders do for her is read her some scriptures and yet she is expected to take the only money she has for food and put it in the contribution box to give to a multi-billion dollar corporation who has so much money that it doesn’t know what to do with it anymore???? How can these people be so blind so that they don’t see how evil and money hungry that is????

We were there too, not seeing what it really is. We were taught not to think and let “big brother” do all our thinking for us and we blindly followed like sheep to the slaughter.

@Excelsior. Thanks for pointing me to Socratic irony. It led me to Socratic questioning, that you were talking about. I am quoting this from Wikipedia about Socratic questioning.

“Socratic questioning illuminates the importance of questioning in learning. It illuminates the difference between systematic and fragmented thinking. It teaches us to dig beneath the surface of our ideas. It teaches us the value of developing questioning minds in cultivating deep learning. Integrating Socratic questions in the following manner in the classroom helps develop active, independent learners; (3) (unreliable source?)

Getting students to clarify their thinking

e.g. ‘Why do you say that?’, ‘Could you explain
    further?

    Challenging students about assumptions
e.g. ‘Is this always the case?’ ‘Why do you think
    this assumption holds here?’

Evidence as a basis for argument
e.g. ‘Why do you say that?’, ‘Is there reason to
    this evidence?’

    Alternative viewpoints and perspectives
    e.g. ‘What is the counter-argument?’, ‘Can/did
    anyone see this another way?’

    Implications and consequences
e.g. ‘But if….happened, what else would
    result?’, ‘How does….affect?’

    Question the question
e.g. ‘Why do you think that I asked that
question?’, ‘Why was that question important?’,
‘Which of your questions turned out to be the
    most useful?’

The art of Socratic questioning is intimately connected with critical thinking because the art of questioning is important to excellence of thought. What the word “Socratic” adds to the art of questioning is systematicity, depth, and an abiding interest in assessing the truth or plausibility of things. others. (32)” Unquote from Wikipedia

My words: It is clear why the Society does not want “independent” thinking on the part of rank and file Witnesses. If a person thinks independently, it helps develop critical thinking skills. Once a person learns to think critically, they demand answers to teachings that don’t make any sense. If the Society can’t answer even simple questions from their rank and file, like how do we PROVE that Jesus took rule in heaven INVISIBLY IN 1914 and was given authority over Heaven and Earth in 1914, then how come then, Satan is the ruler of the world??? If they can’t answer such a fundamental question such as that, they will disfellowship a person who asks that question, to keep them quiet, even if they have been loyally supporting the Organization all their life.

    That is a dangerous cult.

All religions insert themselves between God and the believer
taking over the conscience. Example, Tony Morris telling us
In commanding tones what christians should not wear, and
what’s decent, and what’s disgusting, Bumptious man !!
who do you think you are? we’re not children we can reason
    for ourselves.

Jesus gave one law, the law of “love” that’s all we need, it
benefits ourselves, as well as others. If we can respond with
love when others hurt us, it helps to absorb the blows.
Jesus even forgave his killers. It’s difficult I know I’m still
working on it but it helps to calm the waters when faced with
    aggravating situations.

It’s right to expose hypocrisy in an org, but when face to face
with individuals from that org, love and respect gets the best
results. Jesus dealt patiently and respectfully with the individual
    Pharisee Nicodemus. John 3.

Good suggestion on a group meeting. There are different ex-jw Meetup groups around the world. None close to me. Since people are in different stages of getting out of jw’s each group is different, although probably a good start for a connection. Some people are just looking for a social group to party, others for support and guidance, others are still bitter and angry and constant venting leaves some a little empty. Vast differences in ages can bring entirely different experiences that don’t necessarily mesh.

Sometimes the groups of people don’t mix very well. Me? If I saw anything “ex-jw” close by, I’d definitely give it a try to see how it fit. I think a friend would be better than therapy.

It is a shame we ex-jw’s are not more visible and united. I think that would be the biggest threat to the org. and probably hasten their demise. I can you see a group in every town where a newbie could get a sponsor to help them deal with the changes like AA, Al Anon, weight watchers, etc.

    Hi Shanti

I have a friend who is a former JW from my old congregation – she left several years after I did. She is one of my dearest friends, despite the fact she is some years older than me.

However I was extremely fond of her when I was a member and so I value her friendship for more reasons than just the fact that she is an ex-JW.

It is lovely though that we can both understand each others experiences and so help each other cope with the post traumatic stress that the majority of us ex-JWs have to deal with because of the Org. She has been a tremendous support and was actually the one who told me about Cedars.

I will ask Cedars to pass my e-mail address on to you.

The Jehovah’s Witness religion looks to Abraham and David as good examples or worshippers of Jehovah. Both were ancestors of Jesus. This is what Genesis 25:1-6 says about Abraham after Sarah died: Vs. 1″ Furthermore, Abraham again took a wife, and her name was Keturah. In time she bore him”……Vs. 5 “Later on Abraham gave everything he had to Isaac, but to the sons of the concubines that Abraham had Abraham gave gifts. Then he sent them away from Isaac his son, while he was still alive, eastward, to the land of the East.”

This is what it says about Abishag: Vs. 1-4 “Now King David was old, advance in days; and they would cover him with garments, but he would not feel warm. So his servants said to him: “Let them look for a girl, a virgin, for my lord the king, and she will have to attend upon the king, that she may become his nurse; and she must lie in your bosom, and my lord the king will cedrtainly feel warm. And they went looking for a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel and finally found Abishag the Shulnammite and then brought her in to the king. And the girl was beautiful in the extreme; and she came to be the king’s nurse and kept waiting upon him, and the king himself had no intercourse with her.”

We all remember the account of Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar so that doesn’t need any explanation.

They hadn’t invented “pills” for old men to take when they couldn’t have sex, but I bet you if they had, that account about David would read differently. All these men were ancestors of Jesus and there is nothing in the Bible to indicate they were bad but they all sound like sexual deviants to me. Here Abraham had all these concubines and had many, many children by these young women and all he did when he was about to die, was to gave them gifts and sent them off?????? Sure sounds like a dirty old man to me……

There are so many excellent comments on this post. I really wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to write them. I have drifted away from Watchtower over the years, but my family are all “committed to Jehovah” as they say. My mother recently passed but essentially tortured me with it for over forty years. After her passing and I was no longer needed to help in her care, most of my family cut ties with the exception of my sister. Our relationship and conversation is very light. I go through periods of actually forgetting about the Watchtower and than something will happen that brings it to the forefront. It is truly a religion that you can never seem to let go of.
Reading these posts really helps tremendously. There are many things others catch that I miss, the critical thinking skills of the ex jw community (especially the ones that visit Mr. Cedar’s page) are excellent. Thanks to him and all those that make this a great resource. Happy Winter Solstice!

This is what the Insight Book Volume 1 says about Abishag on page 26:

“Abishag A young virgin from the town of Shunem, N of Jezereel and Mount Gilboa, in the territory of Issachar. (Jos 19:17-23). She was “beautiful in the extreme” and was chosen by David’s servants to become the nurse and companion of the king during his final days. – 1 Ki. 1:1-4.
David was now about 70 years of age (2 Sa. 5:4,5) and as a result of debilitation he had little body heat. Abishag waited on him during the day, doubtless brightening the surroundings with her youthful freshness and beauty, and at night she ‘lay in the king’s bosom’ to give him his warmth, but ‘the king himself had no intercourse with her.” Nevertheless, the attitude later manifested by Solomon regarding her indicates that Abishag was viewed as being in the position of wife or concubine of David. As such, by a rule in the ancient East, she would become the property of David’s heir at the time of his death.”

I wonder how that excuse would work for anybody today who was facing a judicial committee?????

Mac, I enjoyed your comment and it reminds me of chicken pox. As long as you “had” it, it is always in your system and sooner or later, you will probably get shingles from it unless you get a shot. The Watchtower is like the chicken pox virus that is always in your system and with just the right conditions, you will break out in shingles and sometimes the pain from shingles will last the rest of a person’s life. It is so much better if you were never exposed to the “virus” in the first place, but once exposed, it’s always in your blood.

I thought about my last comment about Abishag. It’s obvious that she was “owned” by David and I’d call David a pedophile and a kidnapper. I think if David was a Jehovah’s Witness today in the Organization and if he was an elder, he’d get away with it, easily because the Society would want to keep it out of the papers, so it wouldn’t bring “reproach” on Jehovah’s name.

Anonymous, Thanks for your response to my post. Comparing the Watchtower to the chicken pox virus is a great analogy. I have read many experiences of people that seemed to be far worse hurt by the Society than I. But, it seems no one gets a total free pass from its deeply negative influence. I have enjoyed your posts for a long time and hope to read many more. From what I gather about David, Jehovah must favor warrior over achievers.
Just as a sideline, watching Anthony Morris speak is eye opening. His bitterness, negativity, and almost flat out disdain for the rank and file is apparent. He is the furthest thing from a spiritual leader one could imagine. If there is such a thing as Karma, these men are in for a rude awakening.

David chose the SLAUGHTER of 70,000 Israelites.Never mind it was David committed the sin .70,000 innocent Men killed & their Families Devastated & left without a Bread winner! @Mac and Pickled brain. Thank you Mac for saying what you did about my comments. I worry that I talk to much here so your comment makes me feel better.

There are so many things about the Hebrew Scriptures that don’t make sense to me at all. I remember a long time ago, I made a comment like that about the census account in front of my oldest daughter and I had to promise her that I’d tell the elders about my “sin”. My husband brought that comment up that I had talked about to my kids, to the elders once like it was going to do me in but since I had promised my daughter to tell them what I thought about the Hebrew scriptures already, I had my bases already covered. One of the things that I mentioned to the presiding overseer that time was how all those people were killed by Jehovah because of David’s sin and how it didn’t make any sense to me. I don’t know how anybody could stick up for a man like that or the God that would do such a thing.

The first thing is that you have to believe to be a JW, is that every single word of the Bible is “inspired” by God. The thing is though, with all the “translations”, how could anybody say with any certainty, that any of it is actually “inspired” of God anymore? There is not one single transcript from the original scriptures.

It’s all translations and every translation is biased, except what a lot of people say about the King James, which seems more plausible if you study the history of it. If the Bible is actually a factual account of the creator of the Universe’s account of the creation of the earth and mankind, that is not a kind of God that is appealing to me at all.

I think the elders going public like they are so all the world can hear them give talks was premature. They should have studied the pros before attempting their talks for millions to see. They come off as really low intellectually, as compared to most professional Bible television religious beggars, especially Morris. When Morris was talking about “spanx” and “tight pants” attracting homos, they really come off as ignoramuses. The thing is though, that Witnesses are prohibited from watching any other religious shows, so most Witnesses probably think these men are great speakers.

I apologize for using the word homo in my above comment. I was trying to mock Morris’ talk but I looked it up and it isn’t right to use it as it could be considered offensive.

I have many words that describe the seven old men in Brooklyn:

Delusional, tyrannical, out of touch, pampered, self centered, legends in their own minds.

One day the rank and file may start a mutiny and overthrow the tyrants, but I suspect that most will just leave very quietly as I did.

The Governing Body alias Faithful Slave say that Billions (the majority who have died before the Great Tribulation starts)will be RESURRECTED.So that includes Lot (who had sexual intercourse with his 2 daughters & was a binge drinker) Solomon who was the Greatest Polygamist (300 wives&700 concubines)of all time & an Idol Worshiper.Manasseh (who offered his children up as burning sacrifices to false gods)apparently will get a resurrection so will Hitler,Stalin,Pol Pot as the The Bible says ‘The Wages Sin Pays is Death(Romans 6v23) But According to the FAITHFUL SLAVE if you are a VERY GOOD Person such as a Charity Worker for Oxfam ,UNICEF or a Doctor helping those with Ebola BUT not A JEHOVAH Witness come ONE SECOND after the GREAT TRIBULATION starts you will DIE at ARMAGEDDON!!!Is this JUSTICE !!! From a Loving God or is this SICK JUSTICE Governing Body Old Light Reasoning which we might have a change SOON if ARMAGEDDON doesn’t come???

Pickled brain, you left out Abraham who cowardly told two separate kings that Sarah wasn’t his wife but his sister so the Kings could do with her what they wanted because it was so important to keep Abraham and his “seed” alive for the messiah. Oh, but Abraham didn’t do the terrible thing of lying because SARAH REALLY WAS HIS SISTER!!!

You all make such good comments. I used to read these accounts of Solomon & Lot & others & wondered why they were deemed righteous, when I sat there in the kh so fearful of every little thing I thought that I was doing wrong, never feeling worthy enough. Constantly feeling as though there was an axe wielding over my head if I slipped up. I would read these stories & would have feelings of distaste at the blaring misogyny but I would slip these thoughts to the back of my mind never having the courage to confront them but now that I’m not afraid to see it for what it is… I think how absurd!

Grace, the same for me too. It was probably a good ten years ago, a man at the door called my attention to Judah and Tamar and Genesis and how none of the dates added up either and so I went home and wrote every single person in the whole book of Genesis and added up all the dates and it didn’t make any sense to me then, but I also pushed it to the back of my mind but I will never forget that guy or the house. It was actually the first time, I had some critical thinking come to my head. It wasn’t an apostate that made me “think” either. It was a man at the door.
